Introduction

Over the last 10 years the permanent population of St Moritz has declined by ap-proximately 5%. This can be attributed mainly to a lack of affordably priced rental accommodation, which has affected many of the workers employed in the service sector. This fact largely explains the unsustainable de-population the town has been experiencing. St Moritz, as the rest of Europe, is also having to deal with an increasingly elderly population. People over 60 years of age represent approximately 10% of the popu-lation and as life expectancy is predicted to rise in Switzerland more generally, this percentage is likely to increase. The work of our studio this semester will address these demographic issues by proposing housing solutions for the elderly and for service sector workers. Six sites have been identified to accommodate these programmes, all within the historical nucleus of the town. The students will also be looking at the area at the very centre of the town and their task will be to create a new public space and municipal office.
