2. Drivers for SUDS implementation

6. Summary of the storage concept
• Development causes an increase of flows.
• Normally modelling (simple) is needed to determine the runoff
hydrograph.
• Most SUDS require STORAGE
• Storage is required to ATTENUATE the flows.
• The more the storage, the better the potential for attenuation.
• The undeveloped flow is the target value for the
CONTINUATION FLOW.
• The continuation flow is often know as GREENFIELD RUNOFF.
6. Details of Hydrological design
• Methods of rainfall estimation.
• Determining the inflow into the SUDS.
• Calculation of greenfield runoff.
• Determination of continuation flow.
• Determination of attenuation volume.

6. Estimación de precipitación
• Methods use Rainfall Statistics
• Start with point rainfall intensity
•Duration
•Return Period
• Modify using areal reduction factor
• Normally incorporated into software

complicado)
• Debe haber reglas locales
6. Periodo de retorno
1. Why are we interested? (control of flooding)
2. Short return period continuation (too much control?)
3. Long return period continuation (what is the point?)
4. Could design for a number of return periods ( this is very complicated)
5. There must be local rules
6. Periodo de retorno
Type of Property Return Period
Children‟s homes, boarding schools 750 years
Bungalows, ground floor flats 500 years
Seasonal occupancy 50 years
General property standard 200 years
6. Pause for thought

7. Continuation flow
7. Índices para el drenaje aguas abajo
•Greenfield runoff is used to set the „normal‟ outflow flowrate during events.
•Extended detention – draindown increased to 24h to conserve low flows in rivers.
•Extreme events – must retain an emergency overflow when storage is full to avoid damage.
•Ponds have a bottom level to ensure permanent pool.

• 12 – 15mm runoff distributed over the contributing impervious catchment area
• The volume of runoff generated from the mean annual storm over catchment.

Cadena Tratamiento Agua Pluvial
manejables.
9. Control en origen
Stormwater Treatment Train Source controls are generally placed near the runoff point of origin so the amount of
runoff and the quantity of pollutants that must be dealt with are limited to small and
manageable levels
Source control:
Source control is the control of runoff at or near its source
This may include collecting roof runoff in water butts

Detention basins are vegetated depressions. These depressions are dry
except during and immediately following storm events
9. Control local
The outlet is restricted so that the basin fills with runoff
This provides time for suspended solids to settle out and for the flow peak to attenuate
9. Control regional
Basins, ponds, wetlands and marshes can be part of the natural drainage system.

10. Storage in Pervious Paving
10. Permeable Asphalt – Hpermarché in France
Captures and attenuates surface/rain water for controlled release
The system can be free draining into the sub-grade or contained using an impermeable geo-membrane for re-use or controlled release into the sewer system
It can also capture re-directed rain water from adjacent structures e.g. roofs
Provides an alternative to conventional drainage systems
Improves outflow water quality

10. Advantages of pervious asphalt
Reduced or zero runoff and flood risk
Reduced need for conventional drainage and alternatives which
sterilise land e.g. swales, ditches, urban park areas
Cost savings opportunities – reduced build time
Maximises land use
Grey water harvesting
Soakaways for roofs
Removal of pollutants
Reduced noise and spray.
Improved public comfort/safety
Applications
Lightly trafficked areas
Retail car parks
Sporting areas
School playgrounds
Footpaths and pedestrian areas
Re-direct water from other areas
e.g. roofs
10. Below Ground Storage
Performs the storage component of SUDS.
But no treatment is provided.
Excellent as a component of rainwater
harvesting.
10. Green Roofs
Green roofs reduce annual runoff by at least 50%.
Reduce need for cooling in summer and heating in winter.
Provide habitats;
London buildings require green roofs now.
Skylarks and raptor species (birds).
Assists BREAM score (Environmental score for buildings.
