Venue: - Multi-purpose Hall, Sumandeep Nursing College.
Report:-
A series of workshop was jointly organized by Sumandeep nursing College & BD
medicals on 26th & 27th February, 2015 at Multi-purpose Hall, Sumandeep Nursing
College. Mr. Nirav Bhagad, Area Sales manager, BD India & Mr. Vinayak Zaware,
Sales Officer, BD India were the resource persons.
The participants included nursing staff of Dhiraj hospital, nursing staff & UG &
PG, 3rd Year G.N.M. nursing students of Sumandeep Nursing College.
Overall 80 staff nurses of Dhiraj hospital has attended workshop. A total of 410
participants took part in the workshop.
The workshop was divided in 4 batches:
1st Batch: 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.
2nd Batch: 11:30 – 12:30 p.m.
3rd Batch: 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.
4th Batch: 3:00 – 4:00 p.m.
The topic of the workshop were as follows:
Evolution of Syringes, metal syringes and uses of plastic disposable
safety syringes.
Safe injection clinic
HCW safety clinic
Re-use prevention clinic
Injection pain Reduction clinic
Evolution of Syringes:
Mr. Nirav Bhagad explained about how the evolution of syringe took
place right from animal bladder made injection to glass syringe to plastic
syringes. The latest technology in syringes used is the plastic disposable
safety syringe.
Safe Injection Clinic:
Mr. Nirav Bhagad described about the WHO definition regarding safe
injection. It says that injection is said to be safe when it gives no harm to
patient, health care worker and the society even after it is disposed off.
Seven steps of injection administration were also stated to the
participants.
HCW Safety clinic:
Mr. Nirav stated about awareness about needle stick injury, the use of
safety products, vaccinations available and the PEP (post-exposure
prohylaxis) for specific infectious diseases. Sir showed the safety IV
cannula which prevents needle stick injury after inserting IV cannula to
the patient.
Re-use Prevention clinic:
Mr. Nirav explicited about how the injections are reused. The two ways
are: 1. Downstream reuse done by syringe collectors and 2. Intentional
use done by health care workers. Mr. Nirav also informed about the
prevention of re-use of syringes. Sir also demonstrated about how the
safety disposable syringes work and helps in prevention of reuse.
Injection pain Reduction clinic:
Mr. Nirav mentioned about the factors affecting pain in injection. The
main factors are: 1. Equipment 2. Technique 3. Medication given 4.
Psychological factor. Sir also showed the safety needles which are blunt
needles that can filter the broken glass of ampoules.
After completion of training of all 4 clinics, the participants were informed to
give post-test.
Attendance sheet and opinion register was also made to take feedback from the
participants.

Conclusion:- The programme has influenced nursing staff and nursing students. The
nursing personnel received knowledge regarding prevention of reuse of syringe &
needle stick injury, use of safe disposal syringes and needle. The nursing staff also
came to knew about safe painless injection and its technique. The overall workshop
was very informative and it has made a great impact among nursing staff and
students regarding use of syringes and needles. The participants also stated that the
workshop was very useful and informative.
