Madrid, the capital and economiccenter of Spain, is home to nearly 3.5millionpeople.

Madrid embodies the balance of oldand new, combining a rich culturalhistory with a modern metropolitanfeel. Students can explore world-classmuseums,suchasthePradoandReinaSofia, experience theater and danceproductions, and watch some of thebestsportsteamsonthecontinent.

Madrid offers a vibrant social andgastronomic scene. The city is famousfor its livelystreetcultureandnightlife.Restaurants, bars, and cafés servetraditional Spanish staples and a widevarietyofinternationalcuisines.

Madrid’spublic transportationputs theentirecitywithineasyreach.Thecity’scentral location allows students toreachallcornersofSpainandcanserveasagatewaytotherestofEurope.

TheidealapplicantisaPurdueUniversitystudentwithanoverallGPAof2.5/4.0orgreater.Studentsmusthavesuccessfullycompleted5semestersofcollegeSpanish,ortheequivalent(i.e.SPAN301).

Studentswillbeexpectedtocriticallyanalyzeculturaldifferencesandadapttothehostcountrynormsasappropriate.Itisexpectedthatstudentswillhavethematuritytotravelinternationally.

Thisprogramistheperfectopportunityforstudentswhowanttoimprovetheirlanguageskills,engagewithnativeSpanishspeakers,anddeveloptheirculturalknowledge.¡DeMadridalCielo!

• SPAN498:SpanishCivilizationandCulture

• SPAN302:SpanishLevelVI

ThesecourseswillcounttowardtheSpanishmajorandminor.StudentsreceivePurdueUniversitycredit.CoursesaretaughtbyfacultyfromPurdueUniversityandtheUniversidadAntoniodeNebrija.

Ofspecialnote,SPAN498ArtedelPradoincludesweeklyvisitstothePradoMuseumwithafacultyguide.SPAN498SpanishCivilizationandCultureincludesdiscussionsofcurrenteventsandpoliticsinSpain.

ProgramCosts:Theprogramfeeincludestuitionandfees(6credits),room,board,andlaundryserviceswithaSpanishhostfamilyinMadrid,on-siteorientation,culturalactivitiesandseveralexcursions.TheestimatedprogramfeeforSummer2017is$6,772.

Studentsareexpectedtobudgetadditionalfundsforairfare,cellphoneminutes,textbooks,andpersonalexpenses.

Mostfinancialaidmayapplytosummerstudyabroad.Inaddition,severalscholarshipsareavailabletohelpdefraythecosts,includingthePurdueMovesStudyAbroadScholarship($2000).

Uponacceptanceintotheprogram,anon-refundabledeposit($500)isduebyJan.27,2016.

AcademicProgramUniversidadAntoniodeNebrija:

TheUniversidadAntoniodeNebrijaisaprivateuniversity,accreditedbytheSpanishMinisteriodeEducación,thatspecializesinSpanishasaSecondLanguage.

TheClassroombeyondCampus:

Instructiontakesplacebothinatraditionalclassroomsetting(MondaythroughThursday),aswellasviaexcursionstohistoricandculturalsitesinandaroundMadrid.PastexcursionshaveincludedvisitstotheRoyalPalaceandSenateinMadrid,aswellastripstoSalamanca,Segovia,Toledo,andGranada.Excursionsareincludedintheprogramcost.
