Monthly Newsletter April 2019
Kelly HotalingCommunity Manager
We think we know what makes us happy, visiting with fr iends, tending a garden or enjoying our favorite music. When we open ourselves up to new experiences we are oft en surprised by the
happiness a new activity can bring to us.
As you look through your monthly newsletter and see all the things you can do to keep busy, I challenge you to try one new thing this month! If you haven’t ever been into craft s, come down and make a Spring wreath. If you never thought you would like Tai Chi, make a point to take this class. What? Ping Pong and Pina Coladas? Yes, join us for a fun aft ernoon of table tennis!
Looking ahead to May, our Garden Club will be meeting to make plans for our community garden. Anyone can get involved with the garden, there is plenty to do and it’s wonderful to get your hands in the soil and work side by side with fr iends.
Our Summit Service Club is collecting non- perishable food items for the food pantry at Concerns “U” for the entire month of April. Donations can be brought to the main offi ce, thank you in advance for your generosity! Our residents donated so many children’s pajamas in February and we were able to provide for a lot of local children in need.
*We will have a pool lift demonstration with Cindy on April 4th at 11:30.
*The walking group will be starting up this month, meet at the fr ont of the clubhouse at 5pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Wellness Tip
8.8 million tons of plastics get discarded into our oceans every year. 80 percent of all trash that we create on land ends up in our oceans, of which, 90 percent is plastic. The Pacific Ocean has a “garbage pile” of plastic 2X the size of Texas? We humans now rely on plastic too much and should be mindful of how we use it. Below are 6 Things You Can Do (and Feel No Pain):1. Give up plastic bags. Take your own reusable ones to the store. A trillion plastic shopping bags are used worldwide every year, and 100 billion in the United States alone—that’s almost one per American per day. 2. Skip straws. Americans toss 500 million plastic straws every day, or about 1.5 per person.3. Pass up plastic bottles. Invest in a refillable water bottle. Some come with filters if you’re worried about water quality. Around the world, nearly a million plastic beverage bottles are sold every minute.4. Avoid plastic packaging. i.e., you can buy bar soap instead of liquid. Buy in bulk. Avoid produce sheathed in plastic. 5. Recycle what you can. Even in rich countries, recycling rates are low. Globally, 18 percent of all plastic is recycled. Europe manages 30 percent, China 25—the United States only 9.6. Don’t litter. The Ocean Conservancy has run beach cleanups for 30 years. Of the top 10 types of trash they fi nd, the only non-plastic item is glass bottles. Worldwide, 73 percent of beach litter is plastic. In 2016 the conservancy collected 9,200 tons of trash in 112 countries—only a thousandth of what enters the ocean each year.

The Albany Area Senior OrchestraThis group of mature musicians who love to get together and make music. We come from all sorts of backgrounds: teachers, railroad employees, engineers, car wash owners, professional musicians, you name it. Somewhere along the way, we learned to play an instrument .
The group was founded in 1977 and has been playing together since then. Among our 50 or so members, just about all orchestral instruments are covered.
Vince who plays piano for us on Tuesday at Sing a Long is in this group.
May 28Our bus will leave at 1:00, the show starts on 1:30.
Capital Roots May 13 at 2:00Brushing up on the Basics: Gardening EssentialsEven if this isn’t your fi rst year in the garden, it’s always good practice to brush up on the basics. This class will help you get your garden started successfully and will keep you on track with important information on planting times, garden layout maintenance, and soil health. By planning ahead, understanding what problems you might face and solutions that will work, you’ll have confi dence in tackling and overcoming common garden issues throughout the growing season.
This presentation will take you on a journey, relating how a religious war between Sweden & Germany led to a
fashion statement that results in the founding of Albany. Plus, he will discuss the competition between England
and France for the continental dominance as well as a visit with the pathfi nders who led the fi rst settlers into the
far American West.

Live Well Age Well
The Connected Life Program focuses on
highlighting the four key aspects we believe are a
vital part of a healthy, happy, and balanced life.
Residents are able to choose activities and programs
that complement their personal tastes in Health &
Fitness, Lifelong Learning, Community Activities,
and Leisure & Recreation. The best part? All
programs are free for our residents along with a daily
continental breakfast.
This includes all of our wellness activities, referrals
to community service providers, an array of
educational programs, choices of weekly recreational
events, regular social opportunities and gatherings,
transportation services for shopping, medical visits,
and so much more!
As seniors, sometimes we think we have
seen (and know) it all, but as John Wooden
once said “It’s what you learn after you
know it all that counts.” We have monthly
lectures and presentations on an array of
topics to stimulate the mind.
LEARNING
Being part of a community is more than
just being neighbors. It’s individuals com-
ing together to build each other up, share
similar interests, laugh together, and help
each other grow.
ACTIVITIES
Healthy living is an integral part of the
Connected Life Program. Whether you’re
a devoted yoga class-goer, enjoy taking
evening walks with a friend, love water
aerobics, or just need to meditate in the
morning before you start your day, our
Health program has something for you.
HEALTH
Summit residents are never without an
opportunity to have some fun. Whether
it’s trying their hand at a friendly game
of cards, unwinding in the salon, perfect-
ing their cross stitch, or just relaxing and
catching up with other residents.
