JR. HIGH DINNER FUNDRAISER
Last month, the junior high class
hosted a Fundraiser Dinner at the
community hall and the evening was a HUGE
success!
The students served a delicious ham and
scalloped potato dinner, followed by a silent
and live auction.
Once again this year, the support of the
community was overwhelming! The tables
were filled with silent auction items,
something for bidders of all ages. The live
auction is always fun to watch and Mr.
Kohlman did a great job as auctioneer! Thank
you to everyone who purchased a ticket,
donated items for the auction and opened
their wallets to bid on auction items. Your
contributions made the event a great success!
It was a fun community event, and the kids
learned a great deal about working for an
honest dollar—from selling tickets and
requesting donations, to peeling potatoes and
washing dishes. They served about 200
people and everyone walked away with a full
belly!
The Dinner Auction raised over $3,800 in
profits! Funds will be used for the upcoming
Outdoor Education field trip in Cypress Hills.
Thanks to your support, this trip will be
offered at NO cost to our students, ensuring
everyone can participate
in this rewarding and
educational experience!
Way to go, Rolling Hills!

BASKETBALL ZONE FINALS
On March 4-5, the boys will
compete in the 1J South Central
Zone Basketball finals in Bassano.
Bring home a banner, boys!
This will conclude a successful basketball
season. Thank you to Mark Freeman who
coached our team this year with the
assistance of Lisa Reimer and Brenden Ryan.
We also want to thank Ben Payne for helping
with practices, and Blaine Bolen and Larry
Hirch for officiating our home games—thank
you!
MINI-BASKETBALL
Each year, our grade 4-6 students compete in
mini-tournaments with Alcoma and Tilley
schools. Mrs. Harrowing has started lunch-
time practices with the players. Game dates
are as follows:
March 9—at Rolling Hills
March 14 - at Alcoma
March 21—at Tilley
SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING
The next School Council Meeting will be held
on March 2, 5:30 p.m., at the school. Agenda
items will include spring field trips, grade nine
graduation, family picnic, and the new
Welcome, Caring, Respectful and Safe
Learning and Working Environment policy.
Parent and community input
is important so please plan
to attend.
SCHOOL CASH ONLINE
No more sending cash to
s c h o o l ! P a r e n t s a r e
encouraged to pay for hot lunches, milk, field
trips and other school fees using the School
Cash Online program. Simply visit the Rolling
Hills School website, click on School Cash
Online logo at the top of the page and register.
Once registered, you can purchase school items
from the comfort of your home. No more
searching for loonies and toonies!
If you need assistance with your registration
or purchases, contact the school office at 964-
3640.
HOT LUNCH
This month, the Parent Council
parents will be serving chicken
fajitas on March 7. Order forms are due
March 4, by 10:00 a.m. Parents are reminded
they can use School Cash Online to pay for hot
lunches. Everyone will enjoy a free hot lunch
on March 14. This submarine sandwich hot
lunch will be sponsored by CHS Canada. Thank
you, CHS!
There will be no hot lunch on March 21 due to
swim lessons.
EASTER BREAK
The Easter break for students of Grasslands
will begin on Friday, March 25. Staff and
students will enjoy a week off
to spend time with friends and
family during this special time.
Classes will resume April 4.
SWIMMING LESSONS
Our grade one to nine
students will participate in
swimming lessons at the Lakeside Leisure
Centre in Brooks on March 21-24. Each day
students will receive a one-hour lesson. This
is enough time for them to earn a level on
the Red Cross Swim Program if they are
able to perform all the requirements for
that level.
The actual cost of lessons and
transportation is about $45 per child. The
school believes swimming skills are very
important for all of our children to have,
since we live around many open waterways
(canals, lakes, dugouts, etc.).
Donations from Cookie Connection will be
used to cover the entire cost of this
important program. There will be NO
CHARGE to students as we want all children
to learn this valuable and sometimes life-
saving skill. Thank you, Cookie Connection!
Students will also enjoy a fun swim day,
without lessons, on Friday, April 8.
REPORT CARDS
Term 2 report cards will be sent home on
March 18. Parents are reminded to sign the
report card before returning it. The final
report in June can be kept by parents.
There will be no Parent/Teacher interviews
at this time as they were held in February.
If you would like to meet
with your child‟s teacher,
please contact the school
to set up an appointment.

MAGICAL FLUTE
Rolling Hills School is excited
to host the Calgary Opera
performance of The Magical Flute on March
18. Mozart‟s whimsical opera comes to life
as Calgary Opera‟s Emerging Artist
ensemble performs The Magic Flute for its
2016 Opera in Schools tour. This
fantastical journey through a mythical
world is an ideal 45-minute introduction to
opera for young audiences. This fully-
staged production with keyboard
accompaniment, set and costumes, is a
wonderful experience for students of all
ages.
The cost of this performance will be
covered by contributions from Cenovus
Energy and Cookie Connection. We are so
lucky!
HIGH SCHOOL TRANSITION
In September, our grade nine
students will be starting high
school in Brooks! To help with
the transition, Mr. Roger Cowan from
Brooks Composite High School will come to
our school on April 5. He will meet with our
grade nine students and discuss the
registration and course selection process.
On April 7, the grade nines will spend the
day at the high school with a grade ten
„buddy‟, attending their classes, and meeting
teachers and other students. That evening,
at 7:00 p.m., they will return to the high
school with their parents for an information
night and to pre-register for their grade
ten classes. Wow, where did the years go?
BOARD BITS
Grasslands Trustees approved the school
calendar for 2016/2017. Teachers will be in
before the long weekend in September with
the first day of class beginning after Labour
Day. Along with the two week break at
Christmas, the week break at Easter,
students will be off again for Family Week in
February.
Trustees and staff continue to work on the
“Welcoming, Caring, Respectful and Safe
Learning and Working Environments” policy.
The draft policy is posted on the web site
with the public welcome to add input.
Second reading of the policy will be at the
board meeting on Monday, March 14th with
the third reading set for a special meeting
on Wednesday, March 23rd. The public is
always welcome and encouraged to attend
any school board meetings. The dates of the
meetings are listed on the web page at
www.grasslands.ab.ca.
The Grasslands School Trustees will meet
with Brooks City Councillors in March. The
board tries to meet annually with other
levels of government.
Trustees will be meeting with the Medicine
Hat College Board of Directors in March.
Grasslands School Division is looking at ways
in which they can work together with
Medicine Hat College and the Brooks
Campus.
Trustees also held their annual meeting
with officials from the local Hutterite
colonies. There are seven Hutterite colony
schools under the jurisdiction of the
Grasslands School Division.
BEHAVIOUR NEWSLETTER: “Never
Underestimate Your Power to Effect Change”
Lee Westre, Grasslands Behaviour Specialist
Conflict isn‟t fun, and when your child‟s
behaviour is challenging you, or repeatedly
causes problems at school or in the community,
something needs to be done.
You CAN help him make a positive change, and
the time to start is now.
Understanding that there is a reason for your
child‟s behaviour IS an important first step.
It is also possible that your child is reacting to
stressors in his life. When a child senses
something is wrong between his parents, for
example, it might increase his anxiety and cause
him to worry or to act out.
That does not mean, however, that you should
ignore, accept, or excuse inappropriate
behaviour. If uncorrected, inappropriate
behaviour can become more extreme. It won‟t
just disappear.
Your role as a parent is to help your child
understand what he can do, and what he can‟t.
He needs your guidance and your love, and he
needs you to discipline him in ways that teach
him, help him learn, and hold him accountable.
Children, who are disciplined, and raised in a non
-violent way, are more social, make friends more
easily, are less aggressive, and are more likely
to do well in school.
Make discipline, not punishment, your goal.
And remember, it will take time and patience,
but IT IS worth the effort.
