Scripture Reading and Sermon

JESUS THE MASTER: His message had authorityReading: Luke 4:31-44 (p. 1031)

Luke 4:31-44 (p. 1031) 31 Then he went down to Capernaum, a town

in Galilee, and on the Sabbath began to teach the people. 32 They were amazed at his teaching, because his message had authority.

33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an evil spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, 34 "Ha! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!"

Luke 4:31-44 (p. 1031) 35 "Be quiet!" Jesus said sternly.

"Come out of him!" Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him. 36 All the people were amazed and said to each other, "What is this teaching? With authority and power he gives orders to evil spirits and they come out!"

37 And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.

Luke 4:31-44 (p. 1031) 38 Jesus left the synagogue and went to the

home of Simon. Now Simon's mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her.

39 So he bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.

40 When the sun was setting, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them.

Luke 4:31-44 (p. 1032) 41 Moreover, demons came out of

many people, shouting, "You are the Son of God!" But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Christ.

42 At daybreak Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them.

Luke 4:31-44 (p. 1032)

43 But he said, "I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent."

44 And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

His message had authority

The location of the events in Luke 4 can still be visited today.

More than dry History – the announcement of a Kingdom that still exists today Ruins of the synagogue

1 - REVISIT THAT SABBATH WHEN JESUS SPOKE

This story is told from the perspective of Peter.

His home town, his synagogue, his mum-in-law. In Luke 5, his boat, and his calling to follow Jesus.

JESUS: “His message had authority…”

2 - JESUS AUTHORITY 1 - REVISIT THAT SABBATH WHEN JESUS SPOKE

Is PREACHING worth the bother? (Luke 4:31,44)

Jesus had AUTHORITY – he was not an authoritarian!

His message (32,43) carried weight: The Good News of the Kingdom.

2 - JESUS AUTHORITY 1 - REVISIT THAT SABBATH WHEN JESUS SPOKE

The bad news of Eden (man as ‘King’) is reversed by the good news of Jesus’ rightful authority.

Reversed (1) by “rebuking” demons (35). Reversed (2) by “rebuking” disease (39). Reversed (3) by “rebuking” demons (41). Jesus puts Satan’s work into reverse – and

it is always achived by his WORD OF AUTHORITY.

3 - JESUS PRIORITY1 - REVISIT THAT SABBATH JESUS SPOKE. 2 - JESUS AUTHORITY.

42-44 –He made time to pray, time to heal, and time to release from demons.

But MAINLY – He made time to preach! Jesus knows what you need: PLACE YOURSELF UNDER HIS AUTHORITY Give to spread the gospel, choose a

church that teaches the Bible, and get involved personally in spreading the gospel.

Psalm 147:1-7* (p. 192)

1 O praise the LORD! How good it is

to sing him songs of praise!

How pleasant to give thanks to him

for all his gracious ways!

Psalm 147:1-7* (2/5)

2 The LORD builds up Jerusalem;

and he it is aloneWho reaches out to Israèlto bring the exiles home.

Psalm 147:1-7* (3/5)

3 He heals his people’s broken hearts,

restores the bruised and the lame.

4 He sets the number of the stars

and calls them each by name.

Psalm 147:1-7* (4/5)

5 Great is our Lord and great in power;

his wisdom is profound.6 The LORD sustains the

meek, but caststhe wicked to the ground.

Psalm 147:1-7* (5/5)

7 Sing to the LORD with thankfulness;

with joy his praise proclaim;

And with the music of the harp
