The Stamford Museum & Nature Center is dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of art and popular culture, the natural and agricultural sciences, and history. The Museum is a vital cultural and educational resourcefor the community, and a focal point for family activity and interaction. We seek to inspire creativity, foster self-discovery,promote environmental stewardship, and nurture an appreciation for lifelong learning through exhibitions, educational programs, and special events that enhance the visitor’s experience of our unique site.
Officers
We are pleased to report that the Stamford Museum & Nature Center has finished FY2017.18 with solid financial performance and continued exciting plans for the future.
This year marks a milestone in our history as we unveil the first new capital addition to our property in over 50 years. The Phase I Environmental Education Farmhouse is nothingshort of transformative. As of this Annual Report development inNovember, we have already opened the beautiful new KnoblochFamily Farmhouse overlooking our Heckscher Farm.
We are so grateful to our Founding Investors (so far!) in the Campaign for Future Generations who have gotten the Campaign to $9.5 million, however, we still have a ways to go with our fundraising to reach the $15 million goal. We are excited by the Phase II Astronomy Center project envisioned by our Master Plan. Let’s keep going!
We are most grateful to Carol and Michael Fedele for leading our Campaign for Future Generations with their wisdom and devotion to the Stamford Museum & Nature Center.
Every day we are guided by our exceptional mission, whichtouches all aspects of our institution and challenges us to scalenew heights of service. We are committed to these five key aspects of that vision:
1. Our aspiration to be THE regional resource for environmentaland natural science education and to teach our children well from a diverse pallet of offerings.
2. To be an innovative and challenging cultural arts teacherthrough our art and exhibitions program. And in the comingyear we will be focused on a new signature series of Adult Programs to engage our lifelong learning audience.
3. To get children out-of-doors and engaged in the natural worldaround them. We are deeply committed to Richard Louv’s “no child left inside.”
4. To explore and develop our community role and our opportunities to enhance environmental programs, astronomy, social engagement, and our unique position as Stamford’slargest and most diverse nature-based organization.
5. To engage a committed audience of funders – PremierePartners, Business Affiliates, major donors, and our devoted Members.
We are grateful to our membership, donors, and community fortheir continued support of our mission. We are also pleased toknow that our efforts to enhance our unique position as Stamford’sfine arts museum and our commitment to being a premier regional center for environmental, agriculture science, and natureeducation has earned the SM&NC ever-growing numbers of members and visitors. Overall, the Stamford Museum & NatureCenter attracted 200,000 visitors in 2017.18. Most notably, our educators touched the minds of 38,000 students by presenting1,697 programs in 158 schools through the region, including every public school and most every private schools in Stamford.
Our thanks go to the SM&NC staff for all of the excellent workthey have done to bring us through another winning year of program success. Special appreciation is due to Melissa H. Mulrooney, who this year enjoyed her 13th anniversary as our Executive Director & CEO. Her commitment to excellence andbest practices is held as a model for all of us. Our shared successis measured in our rising profile as a spectacular cultural and educational force for the City of Stamford and the region.
We are deeply grateful to Governor Dannel P. Malloy for his confidence in our Campaign for Future Generations and the State of Connecticut’s commitment to our success. We wish to thank Mayor David M. Martin and the City of Stamford for their continued public-private partnership with us – assisting us with capital and operating support with the clear understandingof our value and economic development impact. We are deeplygrateful.
We gratefully thank William M. Aron, who masterfully served our institution with selfless dedication since 2008, when he joined our Board of Directors. Serving as Board President sinceJune of 2012, William deftly guided our board with visionary leadership through a period of unparalleled expansion, growth and advancement.
Here’s to another wonderful year of service and to our magnificent future! In the following pages, you will see terrificoutcomes from our collective work together in 2017.18. Melissaand I hope all of you will join with us for another year of enrichment and engagement. You and your families are vital to our success.

The SM&NC-Aligned-With-the-Schools program was strongfor another year, with growth in both the number of schools andorganizations reached, as well as our regional footprint.
Over 38,000 students and group members from 158 organizations participated in our school and after school programs within the 2017.18 school year. We continued to see an increase in farm-based education, as well as our Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) aligned classes such asWhat’s it Matter? and Ecosystems Everywhere. Our team of Environmental and Farm Educators delivered 1697 programs in total.
Once again, we expanded our footprint and our reputation forquality environmental education throughout Fairfield andWestchester Counties, as well as other parts of Connecticut andNew York. We visited a number of libraries throughout Connecticut and New York, which expands our potential visitorbase and help to grow our library membership program. We also participated in special programs such as Science Days atthe Intrepid Air and Space Museum in New York City and Stamford STEMfest. Once again, the generous support of localorganizations allowed us to provide transportation to more than1,000 students who would otherwise not have the opportunityto visit the SM&NC. We also completed our third year of an Alliance grant funded program with the City of Stamford thatbrings NGSS programming to all Stamford Elementary schools.Once again we had 100% participation among all Stamford 1st grade classrooms for our interactive, inquiry based Insects & Invertebrates program.
Our Educational Footprint
We also continue to develop long term partnerships withlocal schools that allow educators to bring programs tostudents throughout the school year, ensuring that environmental education is a robust part of their curricula. Schools such as Stanwich, Selma Maisel Nursery School, KT Murphy Elementary, The Children’sSchool, and Children’s Learning Centers of FairfieldCounty receive custom curricula that engage students, and meets benchmarks and standards, throughout theschool year. Our Discovery Spaces, areas within a schoolmaintained by SM&NC and designed with live animals orscience activities, allow for another level of interactionwith schools.
Our Heckscher WILD! Exhibit continues to be a strongdraw for both school groups and public visitors. We welcomed more than 37,000 visitors to the exhibit thisyear, totaling more 110,000 people since opening in2015. Our 40+ plus species of teaching animals fromacross the globe provide visitors with amazing opportunities for interactions through feedings, demonstrations, and other programming.
Our Art, Nature & Me Preschool completed anotheryear as the area’s premier nature and play based schoolfor area preschoolers. Almost 120 three and four yearolds attended two, three, or five day morning and after-noon weekly sessions, led by our team of amazing EarlyChildhood Educators.

Stamford Museum Exhibitions
Welcoming roughly 30,000 visitors to our galleries, this yearbrought with it restored energy and excitement including theintroduction of our new Curator of Collections & Exhibitions,Jillian Casey.
Charged with thought-provoking history, creative culture, andextraordinary art, our annual exhibition schedule continues to stimulate our local and regional communities as well asdrawing intrigue from those afar.
We make certain the care of our SM&NC permanent collection is a top priority. Numerous noteworthy works of artand sculpture from the collection have been conserved thisyear including a remarkable still life from 1925 by worldrenowned Modernist, Alfred Maurer. Ruth and the Four Seasons marble sculptures leading up to the Bendel Mansionwere beautifully cleaned in the spring. Origami & Orbis aDeux, the large outdoor “ribbon” sculptures by Lila Katzenwhich were donated by The Aldrich Museum have also recently been cleaned and restored.
The exploration of the science behind maize and why it’sbeen one of the most significant crops to humankind was the focus of Maize: Mysteries of an Ancient Grain in thesummer of 2017. Illustrations of Imaginative Literature: The Korshak Collection was highlighted in the fall as we hadthe pleasure of presenting the history of the science fiction, fantasy, horror and adventure genres of literature. SM&NC veteran artist Steve Gerberich brought us Gerberich’s Gadgets: Best of Springs, Sprockets & Pulleys making for a
very special (and fun!) holiday exhibition. Birds in Art, a wildlysuccessful exhibition, bringing in almost 6,000 visitors to themuseum in just a couple short months was our spring feature.Organized by the Leigh Yawky Museum in WN, we are excited to welcome back the 45th anniversary exhibition ofBirds in Art in 2021. At the end of June we opened Once Endangered: The Return of Wolves & Peregrine Falcons, which proved to be a popular 2018 summer exhibition.
In addition to our active exhibition schedule, we introduced the ArtAfter Dark program, a new curatedseries of after-hours adult art-soirees.Programmed by Jillian Casey, ArtAfter Dark allows one to experienceSM&NC as never before; merging artand nature, the visual and the sensorythrough creative programs inspired bySM&NC exhibitions, collections andits rich history. The series kicked offalongside the Birds in Art exhibitwith an evening bird walk and booksigning with naturalist and authorFrank Gallo in May followed by a liveBird DJ video performance by artistMichael Barraco with drawing in thegalleries in June. Generating muchenthusiasm, the events collectivelydrew over 80 people to the museumafter-hours.

The Stamford Museum & Nature Center remains a popular spotfor individuals and businesses to hold their private and corporateevents. During the past fiscal year we hosted 5,187 attendeesat 65 events, maintaining the Facility Use growth we haveachieved over the past few years. Clients appreciate the flexibilitythat the SM&NC’s unique site allows. With different indoor andoutdoor spaces for groups large and small, we were able to provide a space to suit each individual’s needs. The Bendel Mansion provides a beautiful backdrop for wedding ceremonies, and we were delighted to welcome sixteen couples into ourspace for their special day. Our Wheels in the Woods picnic areawas the perfect setting for both corporate retreats and familygatherings last year. Other events we hosted include corporatemeetings, professional society dinners, wedding showers, teaparties, and parent socials.
Facility Rentals & Private Events
Another set of seasons has passed on our productiveHeckscher Farm; a year that saw changes and growth.
Staff did a full inventory of our sugarbush maple areas, retiring some trees and adding new trees to the tap list inpreparation for the 2018 season.
Cheshire Barn, one of the jewels of Heckscher Farm, received new windows, due to a generous grant from theNew Canaan Community Foundation.
Our Organic vegetable garden grew to new heights as staff experimented with vertical structures to increase variety and yield. Over a half dozen species of varietal corn wasgrown to coincide with our summer Maize: Mysteries of an Ancient Grain exhibition, and all summer these crops
provided food for animals, staff, and programming. Thisyear the farm welcomed one alpaca cria, eight ducklings, 16 lambs, 16 chicks, and 17 kids. We also saw the first year ofHeckscher Farmers, a program designed to give summercampers in grades 1-4, a small group, hands on experience infarming. The program was met with resounding success witha 100% enrollment with wait list.
Our SM&NC Sunday Farm Market kicked off another
successful year, with great new vendors and returning
favorites. The Heckscher Farm stand sold our own eggs,
wool, and syrup, as well as items like meat and milk, in
partnership with other local farms. Our market-based Edible
Science series bridged food and science, as participants
discovered secrets of their favorite foods, such as elasticity of
dough, while exploring where our food comes from.

Through our exceptional educational programs, family festival weekends, museum exhibitions, working New England farm, 80- acres of nature trails, andcertified Art, Nature & Me Preschool, weare the model for experiential education andcreating lasting memories for individuals ofall ages.
Over the years, we have creatively adaptedour facilities to meet the growing needs ofthe community. We have used capital fundswisely and responsibly to renovate buildingsto make the most of each educational area of our campus. However, though wehave grown by more than 100 percent inthe last 10 years, there has not been a newprogram building added to our campus infive decades.
We embarked on a Master Planning process in 2008. Over atwo year period, we developed a visionary design to identify
critically needed infrastructure, capital improvements, and enriched educationaland public spaces to build future capacityfor the SM&NC.
On November 1, 2018, The SM&NC proudlyopened and dedicated the Knobloch FamilyFarmhouse, a 4,000 square foot facility that will serve as the hub to deliver theSM&NC’s cultural and educational missions.A new Sugar House + Cidery is its companion structure, and a renovated and expanded Parking Lot and Admissions Booth to provide improved access to thecampus.
