CHALLENGES

The decline of city’s electric transport in the early 1990s.The lack of funds for renovation and repair of rolling stock andtechnical facilities

Number of trams and trolleys on the routes has fallen significantly, and small trolley park renewal have a short-term effect

City’s electric transport virtually stopped and they were replaced by Peugeot minibuses. They have started to duplicate routes of trams and trolleybuses. Due to low cost of fuel and high fares in private minibuses has became a business, not a service.

Then Peugeot minibuses were replaced by the rebuilt used cargo vans. Absence of timetable, overload, injuries of passengers, smoking drivers, music inside, violation of traffic rules were a common thing.

No municipal buses remained and almost every third driver is the owner of the minibus

After a partial renewal of minibuses rolling stock there were around 74 routes in the city which duplicated each other as well as electrical transport routes

Since 2008 the construction of tram tracks to the city's largest residential district began. But due to the lack of funding the project has been suspended

2011: more than 30 routes went through the city center, causing difficulties to all traffic, affecting the ecological situation in the center of the city

Major road repairs were not performed at some places for over 80 years. Tramways in some areas were worn by 100%

Motorization of the population

Due to the low public transport services, no payment for car use, and income, motorization began to grow rapidly

Public transport with hundreds of passengers is standing in traffic jams, along with other. No priority lanes for trams in the city center

Suddenly air quality became worth, noise pollution increased, physical activity of some residents decreased

Kopernyka Str.- Slovatskoho Str. December 29, 2010

In Ukraine, a car is still the subject of status. Most trips made in the city only by the driver for short distance with chaotic parking from 5 min. to 8 hours.Over 80% of drivers currently see no alternative their own car

Hundred passengers of public transport suffer because of uncontrolled parking

Tourists and residents wander among vehicles left on sidewalks

Problems with movement for disabled people

In Ukraine evacuation of cars that broke traffic rules is banned (except public transport blocking)

Lack of cycling infrastructure on the streets

Cyclist’s protest in 2010

Poor pedestrian infrastructure

SOLUTIONS

In 2010 was signed a loan agreement with EBRD on € 38 mln.2011 started the reconstruction of the streets along tram routes №2 and №6

City plans to implement an electronic payment system in the city transport from 2017

Traffic Control Center was created. The project implemented in partnership with SWARCO. All trams and trolleybuses equipped with GPS-tracker
