The Internet of Things is on the top of the Gartner Hype Cycle

The Internet of Things according to Gartner

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical objects that contain embedded technology to communicate and sense or interact with their internal states or the external environment.

8

Some consider IoT to be the convergence of IT and OT

Information Technology

Information technology is technology used in the planning and managing the business through information

Operational Technology

Operational technology is technology used in the running of a business that senses or controls physical assets

9

IoT can be looked at as an architectural change that connects IT, OT, devices and Cloud

Business-Driven IoT - Extending IoT towards business strategy

Business Model•Creating and capturing business value from IoE technology innovation

Strategy•Planning changes to the operating model

People•Benefits for and impact on individuals, organizations and eco-systems

Processes•Transforming value chains and operating models

Data•Leveraging data into more useful information for decision making

Integration•Collecting, selecting, cleansing, transforming and aggregating data from the Things, as well as distributing information and initiating actions back to the Things

Connectivity•Connecting things with each other, their control systems and enterprise IT

Why is Architecture important?

• You design the future before you build it

• Impact analysis of potential changes to reality can be done on models

• Different scenarios can be simulated and outcomes compared

• Architecture is Business Strategy Execution (cisr.mit.edu)

• Would you build a high rise without an architecture?

• What happens if you build a city without planning?

IoT Solutions From The Field: Healthcare and Industrial

Solution Scenarios

Real Word Examples• Based on actual real world solutions

Scenario 1: Preventative Healthcare• Improving health outcomes through machine learning

Scenario 2: Closed Loop Automation• Increasing industrial process efficiencies through intelligent automation

Solution Architecture• Common and repeatable patterns for IoT solutions

Scenario 1: Preventative Healthcare

Improving health outcomes through machine learning

Scenario• Personal device used by patient to monitor and report health conditions• Uses sensors that send data to mobile app via Bluetooth Smart• Device provides early warning and advice• Healthcare worker can remotely monitor patients• Utilises data from all patients to improve disease modelling

Benefits• Improved quality of life• Reduce cost for patient and healthcare system• Significantly increased testing• Increases understanding of disease markers

Patient uses device with sensors to measure markers (Blood, Breath, Photos etc.)

App on phone displays results and send the

marker data to the Cloud

Patient experiences

disease symptoms

Patient records the time and severity of the symptoms and

sends the information to the Cloud

Both individual and all marker history and disease symptom records

are used to produce a predictive models which can be queried by the app using marker data. Additionally the model can be used to improve

the measurement algorithm that is in the app.

The app will receive updates to the measurement

algorithm and will also query the predictive model on the

Cloud.

External data for example weather and pollution data can

be included in training the model

Healthcare professionals can monitor individual patients or receive early notification

to expect higher levels of patients seeking medical

treatment

The more the patient uses the systems to measure

markers and report symptoms the better their

health outcomes

Note: Predictive models will be created based on the combination of everyone's data, and also given enough data, models could also be developed based on a particular individuals marker history, effectively creating a personalised model which can be used to assist an

individual in preventive maintenance

Scenario 2: Closed Loop Automation

Increasing industrial process efficiencies through intelligent automation

Scenario• Industrial process that is used in mining, manufacturing, biotech,

agriculture etc.• Uses data from sensors to automate control of systems• Provides early warning and advice• Preventative maintenance to reduce downtime• Iterative improvement of the process by using measurement and analytics

Benefits• Reduced labour cost• Saves energy and materials• Improves quality, accuracy and precision• Increased understanding of process variables

Sensors are added to industrial processes. Sensor telemetry is sent the cloud

As data streams into the cloud decisions can be made that lead to the controlling of industrial

processes and environmental conditions can be adjusted

Environmental conditions can be control, such as air conditioners,

watering etc.j

m

Closed Loop Automation Process (Simple)

Data is stored in the cloud and can be used to gain a better understand of the process variables and

develop models that can provide intelligence

k

A technician can be called to replace a part before a failure,

ensuring minimal interruption to process operation

Existing data that is acquired using OPC UA can also be sent as telemetry to the

cloud via gateway

Sensors are added to industrial processes. Sensor telemetry is sent the cloud

As data streams into the cloud decisions can be made that lead to the controlling of industrial

processes and environmental conditions can be adjusted

An industrial process can be intelligently controlled and

adjusted based

External data such as the electricity pricing service or weather service can also be used to help make decisions.

Environmental conditions can be control, such as air conditioners,

energy source selection, watering etc.oj
