So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all, and especially for those of the family of faith.
Pauls letter to the Galatian Church, chapter 6, verse 10
I want to break from the stories that we have heard over these past few months to remind us of themany opportunities available for us in the Church. (When I mention Church I want us to understand whatwe proclaim in the Nicene Creed, the one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. The whole body of Christconnected by Gods Holy Spirit throughout the world.)
Coming on the heels of this newsletter is Vacation Bible School. I know that the Christian Education Min-istry Team has been working hard for months on this years VBS. As you have heard, its a community -wideendeavor and we want to support it in as many ways as possible. The VBS will need hands on help, teach-ers, people to set up and take down things, lots of food and snacks, drinks, a few bus drivers for the olderyouth who will be doing service projects in the community, and a host of other volunteers. Any help you cangive is greatly appreciated and needed. This is one of the major outreach ministries of Zions where wereach the lives of many children and their families. This is the way we show the community that weare the Body of Christ, by working together with other congregations for the faith developmentand education of these youth! I will be at Defiance College helping out and I know that many others willbe also! Consider helping out; make sure you contact the office, Kelly Worline or Vickie Stephens as soon aspossible.
This fall, I will start a class based on the books of two, excellent women theologians who confront the
challenges of the 21st
Century Church: Phyllis Tickle and Diana Butler Bass. These two have written exten-sively on a wide variety of topics, but we will concentrate on one book from each: Tickles, The Great Emer- gence and Bass Christianity for the Rest of Us. Together with some others from the community, wewill wrestle with the growing challenges and concerns of the modern church community andmore specifically, how we change and adapt to the growing challenges as they meet our owncommunities . The class will be another way for us to connect as the Body of Christ and struggle honestlyand openly. Two classes will be offered, one in the morning and one in the evening. The beginning dateis Thursday, 5 September; we will meet twice a month on the 1 st and 2 nd Thursday .
Have you ever wanted to travel? Have you ever wished you could go overseas? How about to Africa or toEastern Europe? Serbia, in Eastern Europe, and Tanzania, in Africa, are both beautiful countries, neither of which I have visited. Our Outreach Ministry Team is now working to help us get involved with the Christiansin these two countries. In Serbia, the ELCA works with the Slovak Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Augsburg Confession in Serbia-Montenegro and in Tanzania, we companion with the Dodo-ma Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) . Our faith grows and the faith of our fellow believers across the ocean grows as we make and deepen these relationships. As plans are devel-oped, you will receive much more information about missionary sponsorship.
So, three opportunities are becoming available for us: (1)VBS, (2)study together and (3)development of missionary relationships. How can you get involved? How can you help change the lives of those in our com-munity and abroad? As Paul has said to the Galatians, let us work together for the good of all Thatgood begins in Christ and stretches out to the world through our open hands, ready to receive and ready togive.Peace,Pr Tim

2013 SYNOD ASSEMBLY REPORT
One in Christ ...yet Always Being Made New! Where? At the foot of the cross...thatwas the focus and theme of the Northwestern Ohio Synod's (NWOS) Assembly 2013.Our Oneness in Christ was celebrated in many ways including: the attendance and par-ticipation of a 7 -person delegation from the NWOS Companion Synod, the Dodoma Dio-cese in Tanzania, led by Assistant to the Bishop Samwel Mshana who presided at theSending Eucharist; a special "Gentle Worship" service that opened Assembly - an expe-rience provided by the NWOS Disabilities Awareness Task Force and Emanuel, Marion,OH as a service created for people and families living with Autism, hearing and visualchallenges, mental illness, etc.; and the passing of two significant resolutions for inten-tional ministries with People Living with Mental Illness and People Living in Poverty.Keynote speaker, Rev. Dr. Stephen Bouman, ELCA helped voting members dwell at thefoot of the cross while surprise visitors and clowns Daisy, Skittles, and their friends fromSt. Mark, Toledo brought a word of Grace to that dwelling place. With joy this Assemblydedicated a new altar and NWOS paraments and celebrated the 50 th Anniversary of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania along with the ELCA's 25th
Anniversary!Through song, prayers, business, fun, reunions, and making new friends, vendor dis-plays, resources, ingathering of food and donations for the NWOS four agencies: Lu-theran Social Services of NW Ohio, Filling Homes, Lutheran Homes Society and Luther-an Home of Mercy, Bishop Marcus Lohrmann and this synod experienced a Oneness inChrist and reminder that together, at the foot of the cross, we are Always Being MadeNew!

TEMPLE TALK with LOU LEVYJuly 21, 2013
More must be done in the area of mental health to stop gun violence. We have heard this much over the last few months. Lou Levy will focus on mental health and how illnesses such as depression, anx-iety disorders and others really are common. How important it is for family and friends to understand
that these are medical illnesses just like heart disease and diabetes. And, most important of all, thatpersons suffering from such illnesses can get help and do get better, especially when they have astrong, caring support network around them. He will briefly explain how caring people can help family, friends and others with mental issues and how to find the help that is neededespecially for personswithout good health insurance or financial resources. This fall, Lou will be completing 20 years withthe Four County ADAMhs Board where he has done a little bit of everything, but especially communityrelations and work with area mental health and addiction agencies, mental health support groups andthe local NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) chapter. The ADAMhs Board works to make surefunding and services are available for lower income individuals and families with mental health andaddiction issues in Defiance, Fulton, Henry and Williams counties.

We hope you have a sincere interest ingetting to know your deacon as a present and future friend and confidant. Our Pastor is thebest resource with whom to discuss questions and concerns, but your deacon can also serveyou in a similar way.
Deacons are not exempt from having a deacon of their own. At times we need someone willing to lis-ten and we turn to our deacon.
As mentioned the last several months, deacons meet bi-monthly to discuss a variety of topics, but
more importantly we are available for you when your needs might require someone to talk with other thanPastor Tim occasionally.
