THE THERMAL SPRINGS AT TABACÓNIn 1991, Costa Rican architect Jaime Mikowski discovered the Tabacón river and its thermal springs while in search of fresh drinking water for a water boGling project. AOer purchasing the resort from the local Cedeño Gonzalez family, Mikowski renovated and reopened with a fresh vision of a natural and sustainable spa and wellness escape. The result? Costa Rica’s leading thermal springs experience and an idyllic jumping off point for wellness, romance and adventure travelers who want to authenIcally experience the desInaIon.
THE EXPERIENCE Amid a maze of lush, green vegetaIon doGed with brightly colored flowers, a symphony of waterfalls, rushing streams, and soO, sand-‐lined natural pools offer an organic escape from the everyday. When rain gently falls with drops paGering against outstretched trees, a light steam hovers above the surface of the springs, enveloping you as the sounds of local wildlife transport you to the heart of the rainforest canopy.
Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa offers the largest and only 100% natural network of thermal mineral springs in Costa Rica. The Tabacón river flows from the base of the Arenal volcano, forming more than 20 in-‐river pools and waterfalls that are naturally heated by the volcano’s magma.
The high temperatures of the thermal springs cause the water to be rich in dissolved solid minerals such as silica, calcium and lithium -‐ all of which can be absorbed through the skin and are believed to relieve stress, promote relaxaIon and relieve ailments such as poor circulaIon, arthriIs and faIgue.
Climb the smooth stone steps to the top of the thermal springs where temperatures are hoGest. There you’ll find the secluded Shangri-‐La Gardens, which feature six natural pools, a full bar, and cocoon-‐shaped cabanas where guests can curl up with a book or indulge in light bites and cocktails. The gardens are only available to overnight guests ages 18+ and are so stunning and tranquil, you might find it impossible to tear yourself away.
