Introduction to the Teacher
Introduction to the Teacher
This edition of Daily Skill Builders is a powerful tool that will help you equip your studentswith a variety of important skills relating to fractions and decimals. Each half-page reproduc-ible activity targets a specific skill, as shown in the Table of Contents. Tied to NCTM standards, these activities provide practice in basic calculations involving fractions and decimals.
The activities in this book will give your students daily practice with a variety of essentialmath skills. They are arranged so that each activity builds on the skills covered in the previousactivities. You may use them in order, or use any section you need to reinforce your curriculum.Use the standards-correlation chart in the beginning of the book to locate problems on a spe-cific skill.
When they complete the activities, students will be mastering skills such as addingand subtracting fractions with common denominators, mixed numbers, and without commondenominators; multiplying and dividing fractions, mixed numbers, and improper fractions;comparing fractions and decimals; adding and subtracting whole numbers with decimals, andmultiplying and dividing whole numbers with decimals.
We hope you and your students find these exercises both useful and engaging. Fractionsand decimals are an integral part of performing higher math skills and achieving higher testscores. These Daily Skill Builders are designed to help your students hone their math skills torazor sharpness.
In short, use these Daily Skill Builders any and every way you can to make the most of allthe tools packed inside. Expect your students’ fraction and decimal skills to grow throughout theyear!

Parts of a Whole
ACTIVITY 1 Parts of a Whole
A fraction names equal parts of a whole.
1 of 2 equal parts of this circle is shaded.
One-half of this circle is shaded.
!s of this circle is shaded.
3 of 8 equal parts of this square are shaded.
Three-eighths of this square is shaded.
1. Write the fraction for the part of the square that is shaded.
2 of 3 parts of this triangle are shaded.
The shaded part is not @d of the triangle.
2. Why not?
3. What fraction of this rectangle is shaded?
ACTIVITY 2 Parts of a Whole
Fractions are made up of two numbers. The top number is the numerator. It tells how many parts are being discussed. The bottom number is the denominator. It tells the number of equal parts all together. To help you remember, make up a two-word phrase, such as “Nothing Doing” or “Nine Donuts.” The first word should begin with an “n.” The second word should begin with a “d.” When you want to remember which number is on top, think of your phrase.
1. is the numerator. It tells how many parts of the circle are shaded.
2. is the denominator. It tells the total number of equal parts in the circle.
Write the fractions to show the number of shaded parts for each shape.

ACTIVITY 3 Parts of a Whole
1. Draw lines to show three different ways to divide the squares into halves.
2. Draw lines to show two different ways to divide the rectangles into sixths.
3. Color one-sixth of the first rectangle above red. Shade three-sixths of this rectangle gray.
4. Color two-sixths of the second rectangle above red. Shade two-sixths of this rectangle gray.
ACTIVITY 4 Parts of a Whole
Draw a picture or diagram to show each fractional amount.
1. !s of a pie 2. !d of a glass of juice 3. !f of a cookie
4. !s of an apple 5. #f of a sandwich 6. @d of a bottle of water
7. How many !h pieces of pie are in a whole pie?

ACTIVITY 5 Parts of a Group
One of five balls in the group is striped.
One-fifth of the balls are striped.
!g = the number of balls with stripes
1. In the fraction, 1 is the . It tells the number of balls with stripes in
the group.
2. In the fraction, 5 is the . It tells the total number of balls in the
group.
3. How many triangles in this group are white?
4. What fraction of the triangles are white?
In a group of 11 children, 5 are girls and 6 are boys.
5. What fraction of the group are boys?
6. What fraction of the group are girls?
ACTIVITY 6 Parts of a Group
1. How many students are in your class?
2. What fraction of the class are girls?
3. What fraction of the class are boys?
Ms. Mason planted 18 tulip bulbs. !d were white. The rest were red.
4. How many are white?

Use the table to answer the questions.
1. How many students were in the group of top
readers at Jefferson School?
2. What fraction of the group read more than 10
books?
3. What fraction of the group read between 8 and
14 books?
4. What fraction of the group read fewer than 9
books?
5. How many books did the group read all together?
6. What fraction of the total number of books did Larry read?
7. What fraction of the total number of books did Mary and Sherry read?
ACTIVITY 8 Fractional Parts of a Whole and a Group
Write fractions for each shape.
1. Shaded part of the circle =
2. Part of the circle not shaded =
3. Shaded part of the triangle =
4. Part of the triangle not shaded =
5. Draw a shape. Color #g of it.
