Historical

Relationship

• Relationship dates

back to the early 1970s

• In June 2009, Brendan Knoblauch traveled to region to

rekindle relationship and seek out companion projects

• It was the relationship formed with Dr. Damian Mpundu,

Medical Superintendent of St. Raphael’s that helped move

the project forward

St. Raphael’s Hospital

About St. Raphael’s

• One of three hospitals in Diocese of Tanga

• Located in Korogwe (population 44,000)

in the central part of the Tanga coastal region

• 68 bed hospital with 8+ single story buildings offering

services to men, women, and children

• Services include

obstetrics, surgery, pharmacy, laboratory, HIV

treatment/clinic, and general health

Building a Sustainable Project

• Strategy was founded upon building sustainable capacity

through investments in equipment and training

• Investments were leveraged for further funding and

support from Korogwe Town Council

• Dohio worked to involve medical professionals, hospitals

and schools in the project

• Partnership with MedWish International and Brother’s

Brother helped with the shipment of medical supplies

Key Accomplishments

• John Ramadani School of Nursing formed with over 100

students enrolled in nursing assistant program

• Recently received certification to begin a certificate

nursing program that will address the nursing shortage

• New service agreement with Korogwe Town Council

approved, providing increased funding for the

hospital, including salary support for administrations and

other support staff

Lucas Mmole RN

Interim Superintendent

Nursing School

Key Accomplishments

• Two containers of medical equipment have been

sent, providing major upgrades to their surgical theatre

and additional services, supplies, and teaching aids.

• Surgical theatre now had operating table, theatre

lights, life monitors, suction pump, oxygen

concentrator, and other surgical supplies.

• EKG provided is the only one in district and diagnoses

can be supported through telemedicine. It also provides

an income source for the hospital.

Medical and Engineering Team

• The project has grown to include

medical, engineering, and other nonprofit professionals.

• The combined value of a medical professional, offering

training on new equipment and an engineer with the

ability to set up, troubleshoot, and fix equipment, has

been very valuable.

• Three trips with a medical professional and two trips with

an engineering professional have been made.

NEXT STEPSWhich ongoing issues will we address next

Third Container in March

• Will continue our partnership with MedWish and Brother’s

Brother to send a third container of medical equipment

• Looking into Doppler’s to help monitor fetal heart

rates, currently a Pinard horn is used

• Will work towards a list

of other equipment and

supplies requested,

including an ultrasound

Power at St Raphael’s

• Local utility provides electrical power for the hospital

• Power source is hydro electric power

• Random power outages due to aging power infrastructure

• Scheduled power outages in dry season to conserve water

Impact of a Power Outage

If surgery in progress…• Often called battlefield surgery methods

• Nurses use cell phones or flashlights to provide light

• No suction machine to clear surgical field; use pads to mop up blood

• Difficulty increases greatly putting patient at greater risk

• No air conditioning and the windows are closed

Potential Power Projects

• Surgery suite backup power

• Backup power for St. Raphael’s campus

• Solar power projects for various buildings

Water Infrastructure

• Community well that provides water for hospital, Diocese

offices, church, and a number of homes of hospital and

Diocese personnel

• Well is at bottom of hill

• Hillside has a number of pit latrines in place

• Potential source of contamination to well

• Water distribution system is old and needs to be upgraded

(plastic pipe instead of galvanized steel)

Fundraising and Awareness

• Started a blog to share stories and efforts with over 1,000

views since creation in December.

• Dr. Damian Mpundu and Lucas Mmole RN will be coming

in March 2013 to help garner support.

• Several parishes will hold events to drive fundraising and

awareness, and our most effective efforts thus far have

been through parishes and word-of-mouth.

• Will work with MedWish, Diocese of Ohio, and local media

to get the word out through other channels.

BACK UP SLIDESMore details as questions may arise

Power Projects for St Raphael’s

• Backup power for surgery suite

• Provide backup power to supply surgery suite when

outage occurs

• Battery backup would require less maintenance but

larger up front costs

• Generator less up front costs but significantly more

maintenance • Fuel, oil change, filter change, overhauls, etc.

Solar Power for Buildings

• Solar power for entire hospital very expensive

• Break down project into smaller solar projects that power

lights, etc in individual buildings

• Smaller power requirements easier to fund smaller projects

• Eventually interconnect buildings as more buildings are converted

to solar.

Potential Water Projects

• New well located away from sources of

contamination

• Alternative to connect to city water system

• New water distribution system• Piping

• Storage tanks

• Filter & sanitation of water supply

• Increase supply capacity
