Task 8 – Technical Features

Layout (Type and Images)

A page is made up of text, images and space. Text can be everywhere on the page, there is a header which is located at the top of the page. Under that includes the body of the page where the information is and below that is the footer. This layout is used on every page. Text can be seraph or san seraph. Seraph means that there is curves on the letters of the text and san seraph does not have any. Seraph is a less modern typeface for text as they have curves however san seraph is more modern because it doesn’t include curves. Seraph is usually used for graphic styles such as international.

Tiles (Master Heads, Headers)

Master Head is the title of the topic or subject of what is being presented on the page. For example here is a photo of vogue magazine’s master head.Headers are featured on the top of the page of a website. For example I made my own header on my own website made with WordPress.

Text – Column

Text can be shown on a page in a column format. This is featured in newspapers, the columns help to divide information in that segment of the page in an orderly fashion.

Text - Credits

Credits is text used in all film and tv production to present the casting and crew listing. It uses transitions to make its way on the screen. The text of the credits uses a typeface in the format of the theme of the film for example Star Wars uses yellow arial text which uses the wipe transition to make its way onto the screen.

Text – Typography

Typography is a art of text used to make an appeal of the theme of what is tying to portray. For example Romance uses seraph text in the colour of either red or pink to represent the genre.

Text – Font

Font is text which is displayed in a certain style and size. Below shows an image of a range of different fonts.

Text – Leading

Leading means the space between text. In a poster promoting a venue or message there would be minimal information on the page.The poster below shows 7 words that have lots of space on the page with the words centered in the middle of the page. This helps the reader to concentrate on those words.

Text – Baseline

The baseline is the line where the bottom of the word sits. This is used all over a pager with text. For example a magazine has a baseline for the master head of the magazine and for the text in the body of the page to help the reader to understand what is on the page through its order.

Text – Letterforms

Letterform refers to the style of the letters, this includes the size of the letters.

Images, Scans, Photos, Graphic Arts

• Images are visual descriptions of an object or people, they’re used on posters and websites to help the audience to understand or visualise what is trying to be advertised.• Scans are changing physical images into data on a device. • Photos are images taken with a camera device which can

be loaded onto a computer as data and printed into a physical image of the image.• Graphic Arts are different styles art. For example there is

anime, op art etc.

Imported Branding (Logos)

Logos are words, a letter or image used to represent something etc the yellow “m” is used to represent Mc Donald's restaurant, the company also has a slogan, “im loving it” which sometimes can be used in a logo.

Composition – Colour

Colour is essential within graphic design, it makes designs decorative and appealing to a certain audience. For example a horror poster would feature dark red or black colours to epitomise evil and gore.

Composition - Space

Space in graphic design helps to organise presentation, space creates order. For example in a newspaper there are margin spaces to organise the text on the page.

Composition – Point of Focus

A point of focus is used within a design make an image more prominent to our eyes. An example of this could be to use words with distinctive colours or boldness. This is used to emphasise on what the message is conveying.The poster is of Kitchener’s “We Need You” poster used during the first world war to get people to sign up for the army. The “you” is more bold and larger than the other words on the poster, that is the point of focus.

Composition - Balance

Balance refers the placement of images and words. In a poster there is varied images to fill in space and text to convey images.

Composition – Hierarchy

Hierarchy's refer to the order how we see things. For example in a newspaper we see the header first which tells us what newspaper it is then we view the information and finally the footer indicates who it is written by.

Composition – Grid (Structure)

This is a pre-production task which involves illustrations of how something will be set up. For example someone could be designing a website and would have to draw out where everything goes.
