State-of-the-artfacility bringsprogram ontomain campus

It’s good to feel needed.The staff in the newly

remodeled HealthSciences Building is excited to be working inthe heart of the campus atMontana Tech. Assistantprofessor Miriam Youngsaid she’s glad to be in hernew office on the maincampus, a relocation fromthe College of Technologyin south Butte.

“We feel like we’re partof the campus now,”Young said. “We felt likewe were the stepchildbefore.”

The campus spent $2.8 million renovating theformer PetroleumEngineering building,which is located at thecenter of the campus. Theremodeled facility now hasmore than 16,000 squarefeet of space for both theNursing Department andthe Institute forEducational Opportunity.

will be used by 22 of her staff and 11 fromthe Nursing Department.

“This is a really exciting time for us,”Verlanic said.

She said it was a good decision toremodel the building as opposed to build-ing a new facility. Verlanic noted that thisis a historical building with a distinctivelook. The remodeling changed the interiorwithout changing the original façade.

The building has three floors and willbe available for technical outreach for stu-dents. The facility will house theAmeriCorps operations to help studentsget credit for community service. Thebasement level will be the headquartersfor the Clark Fork Watershed EducationProgram.

Verlanic said the state-of-the-art

classrooms will be used this summer forlow-income high school students to take acollege simulation courses to prepare andencourage them to seek higher education.

“Our goal is to encourage students topursue math and science,” Verlanic said.

Likewise, the Nursing Department willnow have four classrooms and two nursing labs. These classrooms will beequipped with multimedia and high-techequipment.

One lab will include a simulated man-nequin of an adult and a simulated baby,so nurses can train with them like anactual patient. The other lab will be forbasic hospital training.

Thursday’s open house, from 4 to 7 p.m., will be an opportunity for thepublic to meet the entire staff and tour thefacility. There will be guest speakers,along with music, food and activities.

“The event itself will be a lot of fun,”Verlanic said.
