1. ‘Our American Cousin’ is a play in three acts by Tom Taylor.

The play is a farcical comedy whose plot is based on the introduction of an awkward, boorish American to his aristocratic English relatives. The play's most famous performance at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. on April 14, 1865.

Halfway through Act III, Scene 2, the character Asa Trenchard (the title role), played that night by Harry Hawk, utters one of the play's funniest lines, "Don't know the manners of good society, eh? Well, I guess I know enough to turn you inside out, old gal—you sockdologizing old man-trap..."

As expected there was a huge raucous laughter from the audience for this line.

According to the Mahabharata when Bhrigu's wife Puloma was pregnant, a Rakshasa fell in love with her and carried her off. Puloma's child slipped from her womb, called a 'chyut' child in Sanskrit, (early delivery) and thus received his name X. Many years later King Sharyati offered his daughter Sukanya for marriage to X, who was now a Rishi, so that she could take care of the revered saint. Later, the Ashvins came to his Ashram and tried to seduce Sukanya. Sukanya who refused to leave her husband, instead asked the Ashvins to restore X's youth. Following their advice, X's youth was restored by a combination of three treatments. Certain herbs were put in to a pond and the Rishi was asked to have a dip in the pond, called 'Chandra Koop’. A herbal paste was prepared for application on the body of Rishi, which was part of 'Kayakalp'. And a special herbal paste, Y was prepared for Rishi to take as medicine.

The XY effect is based on the commonly accepted perception that you get what you pay for. In the 1950s, Coca Cola was twice as expensive as Pepsi. Yet, Pepsi sales increased after they raised the price of the soda. In 2010, consumers pay more for brand-name bottled water, believing it is of better quality even though water is colorless, tasteless and odorless. The Effect usually refers to the cost of tuition at private colleges and universities. Many parents assume that a higher-priced education is a better education.

Sir James, writing in September 1938, was led to remark: ...... s tree is all right but his tiger looks too like some species of dog, and I am afraid that a design of a dog and a tree would arouse derision among the irreverent. .....'s tiger is distinctly good but the tree has spoiled it. The stem is too long and the branches too spidery, but I should have thought that by putting a firm line under the feet of his tiger and making his tree stronger and lower we could get quite a good result from his design. What was he talking about?

The X can be traced back to the 1st century A.D. and the Old Roman cursive, in which the letters E and T occasionally were written together to form a ligature . However, during the development of the Latin script, while the use of ligatures in general diminished, the et-ligature continued to be used and gradually became more stylized and less revealing of its origin. The modern italic type X is a kind of et-ligature that goes back to the cursive scripts developed during the Renaissance.

In San Francisco, he got the chance to see his idols, most notably B.B. King, perform live. . After several years spent working as a dishwasher in a diner, X decided to become a full-time musician. In 1966, he gained prominence by a series of accidental events all happening on the same day. X was a frequent spectator at Bill Graham's Fillmore West. During a Sunday matinee show, Paul Butterfield was slated to perform there but was unable to do so as a result of being intoxicated. Bill Graham assembled an impromptu band of musicians he knew primarily through his connections with the Grateful Dead, Butterfield's own band and Jefferson Airplane, but he had not yet picked all of the guitarists at the time. X's manager, Stan Marcum, immediately suggested to Graham that X join the impromptu band and Graham assented.

In 1944, Japan realized that the Allied Navy was preparing to claw back the Philippines. Hence, they decided that what their country lacked in military might, it would make up for in fervor. That was how the XXXXX was formed, led by Admiral Takijiro Onishi a ruthless warrior and one of the heroes of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. The first strike came on October 25, 1944, off the Philippine island of Leyte, and included 26 fighter planes. It peaked with the start of the battle of Okinawa in April 1945. Admiral Takijiro Onishi, after seeing all his desperate attempts to ward off his country’s imminent defeat fall through and hearing the Emperor’s decision to capitulate, swam in a pool of blood for a whole 18 hours and died squeezing the hand of a close friend. X was originally supposed to be in Barcelona. But thinking the thing would end up looking like an eyesore, the city rejected its Designer Y’s plans, and he was forced to repitch the project elsewhere. Luckily, Y found a home for his idea, where it could serve as the main archway for the 1889 International Exposition. Truth be told, the X wasn’t supposed to stay up for very long. In fact, it was offered for sale as scrap and was spared only because it proved useful to the army. (They found that its 984-foot height worked nicely as a communications tower.)

In common parlance, a X is someone who, given a certain argument, takes a position he or she does not necessarily agree with, for the sake of argument. In taking such position, the individual taking on the role seeks to engage others in an argumentative discussion process. The purpose of such process is typically to test the quality of the original argument and identify weaknesses in its structure, and to use such information to either improve or abandon the original, opposing position. It can also refer to someone who takes a stance that is seen as unpopular or unconventional, but is actually another way of arguing a much more conventional stance.

The X is described as resembling "a small, thin, flexible lap computer" encased in a "sturdy plastic cover" with the words "Don't Panic" inscribed on it "in large, friendly letters". It is presumably of robust construction, making it able to withstand falling through time/space wormholes and being thrown into swamps, being rescued, and still operating.

Y bought the rights to the novel anonymously from Robert Bloch for only US$9,000. He then bought up as many copies of the novel as he could to keep the ending a secret. To ensure the people were in the theaters at the start of the film (rather than walking in part way through) the studio provided a record to play in the foyer of the theaters. The album featured background music, occasionally interrupted by a voice saying "Ten minutes to X time," "Five minutes to X time," and so on. Every theater that showed the film had a cardboard cut-out installed in the lobby of Y pointing to his wristwatch with a note from the director saying "The manager of this theatre has been instructed at the risk of his life, not to admit to the theatre any persons after the picture starts. Any spurious attempts to enter by side doors, fire escapes or ventilating shafts will be met by force. The entire objective of this extraordinary policy, of course, is to help you enjoy X more. Y"

On a London vacation with his wife, Cole declined to enter a museum on the north London thoroughfare. "I told her, 'I've seen enough museums. You go on in, take your time and look around and so on, and I'll just stay out here and see what's going on outside,'" he recalled. Parked just outside was a black police van. "I like to just start talking with people," Cole said. "I walked out, and that cop was sitting there in that police car. I just started carrying on a conversation with him. I was asking him about all kinds of things, about the city of London and the traffic control, things like that. Passing the time of day.“ It was 10 a.m., Aug. 8, 1969. Photographer Iain McMillan was on a stepladder in the middle of the street. “I just happened to look up, and I saw those guys walking across the street like a line of ducks," Cole remembered. "A bunch of kooks, I called them, because they were rather radical-looking at that time. You didn't walk around in London barefoot.”
