Technology Standards for Instructional Personnel

Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind

Virginia Code

In 1999 the Virginia General Assembly amended Section 22.1-298 of the Code of Virginia as follows:

"On and after July 1, 2003, persons seeking initial licensure or license renewal as teachers must demonstrate proficiency in the use of education technology for instruction."

VSDBNew EmployeesA. Instructional staff, who are transferring to VSDB-S

from another Virginia school and have already demonstrated proficiency through that system, may provide documentation to the Human Resource Office.

B. If you graduated after December 1998 from a college in Virginia, you have met the requirement. You will need to submit a College Verification Form to the college for verification as part of the initial licensure process.

C. Choose one of the following options.

Options for Employees Option 1: Satisfactory completion of an

accredited college or university technology course.

Option 2: Satisfactory completion of a non-accredited technology skills specific training/classes, which meet the standards, and 1 observation integrating technology.

Option 3: Satisfactory completion of a portfolio and technology skills checklist plus 1 observation integrating technology.

Standards Requirements

There are 8 standards in which teachers must complete.

Standard 1Demonstrate effective use of a computer system and utilize computer software. ALL of the following are required.

Recognize and connect: power cords, monitor, mouse, keyboard, printer, USB connected devices

Perform basic troubleshooting tasks Load paper in a printer Delete a print job Describe how to clear a paper jam Demonstrate adding/selecting a network printer on

campus Print-out one document created with different

software programs PowerPoint, Inspiration/Kidspiration, MS word

Successfully use Clarity

Standard 2 Instructional staff shall be able to apply knowledge of terms associated with educational computing and technology. Choose One of the following

Choose 20 questions, choose Technology 8 Send results to ITRT

Create an activity or lesson plan to teach basic computer vocabulary appropriate for grade or content area.

Develop a multi-media presentation to teach appropriate technology vocabulary to students.

Standard 3Apply computer productivity tools for professional use. Choose TWO of the following…

Word processing skills: Create a syllabus of your class or support area:

Spreadsheet skills Database skills Computer generated test or activity for a

class you teach Create a URL and webpage for students,

class or school/parents Create a computer generated crossword,

word search or other puzzle game. Provide a copy of a professional

presentation made to staff or at a conference.

Standard 4 Use Electronic technologies to access and exchange information. Choose TWO of the following… Use the school’s e-mail services to compose, open,

save, reply and attach a file to e-mail messages. Set up and use personal distribution list Use the sort and find functions to organize and/or

locate specific messages Use a browser to: navigate the internet, create

bookmarks/add to favorites, collect or print information

Use basic search techniques to perform research and collect information from a variety of resources.

Use of a thread from a professional listserv you have joined.

Evidence of your class’s participation in a web project. Create a web-based lesson plan or pages that you

read to research a field trip.

Standard 5 Identify, locate, evaluate, and use appropriate instructional technology-based resources (hardware and software) to support SOL and other instructional objectives. Choose TWO of the following.

Identify and submit a review of 1 software title and 1 website used to enhance instruction in your content (use the software review form on SharePoint).

Create a document that contains a scanned image that you produced for a school activity.

Use a digital camera image for a curriculum-related activity Create an activity that utilizes an interactive white board. Review 3 instructional software programs. Include the title,

publisher, cost, brief summary and how you will apply to your lessons.

List 3 websites that provide useful information about your work area of responsibility for parents, students or staff members.

Produce a resource list that includes other types of media: videotapes, magazine articles, books or other resources.

Standard 6 Use of educational technologies for data collection, information management, problem solving, decision making, communication, and presentation within the curriculum. Choose TWO.

A copy of a student generated spreadsheet from a class assignment.

Student generated desktop publication (newspaper, flier, advertisement, illustrated story, etc.) from a class

Student generated word processing document from a class assignment. Include course, date, and lesson objective

Create a form designed by you to collect data from parents, students, or staff

Design a database to organize work related information.

Develop a spreadsheet to analyze data and produce a graph.

Create a class web page.

Standard 7Plan and implement lesson and strategies that integrate technology to meet the diverse needs of learners in a variety of settings. Choose ONE

Submit a lesson plan that utilizes the computer lab and student use of technology

A lesson plan that utilizes one computer in your classroom.

Create a bibliography of resource on a specific curriculum topic you created using electronic resources.

Standard 8 Demonstrate knowledge of ethical and legal issues relating to the use of technology. Must do ALL.
