How art, technology and design inform creative leaders

A TED Talk by John Madea

President of the Rhode Island School of Design

Maeda seeks to combine technology, design, art, and leadership into a single synthesis.

Maeda spoke of his history with technology, design and art and how those experiences affect the decisions he now makes as a leader.

He used many stories and examples to better illustrate his topic, such as his human computer experiment.

Towards the end, he revealed a program that displays connections between different departments of a business.

He then states how a leader could use those connections to increase

efficiency in their business.

Maeda engaged the audience from the start by asking many questions and relating to them through a series of stories.

John Maeda best exemplified the Fourth Commandment (To tell a story) as he told of his vivid experiences.

Dynamism: 4/5

Maeda was animated and very vocal, but some parts of the speech felt still and dull.

John Maeda used Nancy Duarte’s concept of telling a story throughout the entirety of his speech.

I learned from this speech that most things in life overlap and figuring how to use that to my advantage may make my life easier.

Both Ken Robinson and John Maeda are very vocal in their presentations. Robinson has a more animated tone in his voice while Maeda is more animated with his body language.

The best tip I can give to my classmates from this presentation is not to be afraid of calling on your past experiences.
