Issue 11 - Term 3 Week 3 Wednesday, 31st July, 2013
From the Principal’s desk Education Week is upon us and we look forward to many special events taking place for our students at Temora Public school. At T.P.S. we delight in the opportunity to invite families and the local community to celebrate the successes of our students and witness the wonderful learning that takes place every day. This Friday I hope to see throngs of parents, carers, grandparents and community members present at our special assembly and open day to see what our students are learning at school. Congratulations to Kate H and India K who performed in the Riverina Dance Ensemble at the opening of Education Week in Wagga on Monday. The girls were selected for this special dance troupe and have been attending practices for the past few weeks. On Thursday our Dance Festival troupe will perform “Where’s Wally?” in the Market Place at 12.25pm. It’s wonderful to see our students being given the opportunity to perform at regional events in the performing arts. Education Week kicked off with a bang with the NED assembly on Monday. The performer Clyde wowed the audience with his yo-yo skills, sense of humour and positive messages about becoming a champion at school and in life. Students and staff laughed and laughed until their jaws ached. Clyde performs for four thousand students each week and ranked our students in the top five percent in terms of participation, enthusiasm and behaviour. He was impressed with how they could laugh and then quickly recover to listen to the message. Congratulations everyone, what a positive way to start the week. Teachers have noticed that students are using the messages in class to encourage their friends and persist in their learning.
Regards,
Sharon Reardon

Our next character is Ethicon.
Ethicon represents Responsibility.
Ethicon understands the importance of his actions and uses this to act responsibly in his world.
He is a deep, critical thinker who takes time to get all the facts. He is open-minded and willing to explore new options.

Live Life Well @ School Segment …
Cordials, soft drinks and sports drinks
Cordials, soft drinks and sports drinks are high in sugar, and often contain artificial colourings and
flavourings as well as caffeine. For these reasons, cordials, soft drinks and sports drinks should be reserved only for special occasions. Too much of these drinks lead to excess consumption of sugar and kilojoules, which may lead to weight gain and tooth decay.
Take a look at the sugar content found in these drinks:
As you can see, water has zero spoons of sugar making it the best option. Choose water as a drink whenever possible.
Drinks Teaspoons of sugar
Can of soft drinks – 375 mL 8 to 9 tsp
Bottle of soft drink – 600 mL 15 to 18 tsp
Fruit juice drink 250 mL 3 to 5 tsp
Cordial – 250 mL diluted 4 to 5 tsp
Water 0 tsp
Student’s personal property
Unfortunately the pile of lost property continues and we are unable to return items to their rightful owner as they are not labelled with a name. This is as frustrating for us as we are sure it is for you. Please ensure you mark all clothing that children bring to school. A good spot for the school jumpers is on the inside on the back of the logo where it is white. This is not able to be removed. A good black permanent marker will do the job. Please ensure your child does not leave home without a school jumper. It is winter and it is cold. A reminder that should your child wear a scarf to school it must be school colours.

Resiliency Robbers
an extract from Michael Grose Parenting Ideas:
All parents have the best of intentions when raising kids.
Wanting what is best for kids can cause parents to make
decisions that are not always in their (children’s) long-
term best interests.
If you buy the line that the promotion of resilience is in
the best interests of kids then check out the following
common parenting mistakes that reduce children's
resilience. We will run this over two weeks.
Robber #1:
Fight all their battles for them
Nothing wrong with going into bat when kids struggle or
meet with difficulty inside or outside school but make
sure this is the last resort, not the first option.
Resilience notion #1:
Give kids the opportunity to develop their own
resourcefulness.
Robber #2:
Make their problem, your problem
Sometimes parents can take too much responsibility for
issues that are really up to children to work out or decide.
Here’s a clue if you are wondering what I am talking
about: a jumper is something a mother puts on her son
when she is cold!
Resilience notion #2:
Make their problem, their problem.
Robber #3:
Give kids too much voice
In this era of giving children a voice it is easy to go
overboard and allow them too much of a say in what
happens to them. Kids often take the easy option to
avoid hard or unpleasant situations.
Resilience notion #3:
Make decisions for kids and expect them to
adjust and cope.
Robber #4:
Put unrealistic or relentless pressure on kids to
perform
Expectations about success and achievement are
important. Too low and kids will meet them. Too high
and kids can give up. Too much and kids can experience
anxiety.
Resilience notion #4:
Keep expectations in line with children’s abilities
and don’t put excessive pressure on them.
Continued next week.
