Talk about it (before the film)

A long take is an uninterrupted shot, from pressing ‘record’ to ‘stop’.

There is no cutting or editing. What would it be like to watch a 10min

film with no cuts or other shots?

Talk about it (after the film)

• What do you think the boy is watching? Is it a film, a play, dance?

What do you think the story is, how can you tell this from hisexpressions?

• What is the effect of only having one continuous shot with no cuts?

How did it make you feel? What changed when the camera moved

to include other faces?

• Do we hear the same sounds and music as the children in the film?

How can you tell? Can you think of moments when the music

helped you understand the children or the performance?

• Does it remind you of any other films - the story, setting, characters,

the way it is filmed or edited, the music or sound? What are the

similarities?

Write about it

Bring your ideas together in a review and share it on our film clubs

website! You could include a summary of the story, mention other films

it’s like, describe what you particularly liked or disliked and give it your

star rating.

Extension activities:

Watch the film again with the sound switched off and use instruments or

recorded sounds to create your own soundtrack. Think about the way the

music affects how you understand what the boy is watching and feeling.

Imagine you are one of the other children in the audience (the camera

stops on 3 other faces) – from their faces, what do you think they

made of the show? Hot seat what they are thinking at different parts of

the performance.

Ten Minutes Older

Latvia | 1978 | Cert. U | 10mins

Director: Herz Frank

In this unique short we watch a young

boy, in close up as he is mesmerised by

the performance in front of him. Although

we never see what he watching, we can

trace the shocks and excitement of the

show in the dramatic expressions that pass

across his face. The effect is enthralling for

audiences of all ages.
