COUNTDOWN TO 2020
FIFTH NATIONAL CONGRESS OCTOBER 26-28, 2015 NASHVILLE
TENNESSEE
HONORING THE PAST
ENRICHING THE PRESENT
SHAPING THE FUTURE
NASHVILLE AIRPORT MARRIOTT, 600 MARRIOTT DRIVE, NASHVILLE, TN 37214
WELCOMEFIFTH NATIONAL CONGRESSThe opening and closing speakers of the Fifth National Vision 2020 Congress are Ellen Goodman and
Justice Connie Clark — two women with encouraging messages for women everywhere.
In the hours between their appearances, this Vision 2020 Congress will stimulate an exchange of
ideas about what’s ahead in our “Countdown to 2020.”
The milestone year of 2020 doesn’t seem so distant now, and that should provide the motivation to
turn up the volume on reaching our goals for American women and girls.
We have assembled in Nashville a gathering of stunningly talented people, united in the belief that
we can all see a better day for women, and we can all see Vision 2020 as a way to achieve it.
Our time together is precious. That’s why nothing less than a full-participation approach will work.
We want to know what you’re thinking, how you define equality and what your ideas are as to how we
can help each other.
WELCOME! THIS IS THE “VOLUNTEER” STATE. AND HERE YOU ARE!
Lynn H. Yeakel, MSM Director and Betty A. Cohen Chair in Women’s Health
Institute for Women’s Health and Leadership
Founder and Chair, Vision 2020
A VISION 2020 OVATION TO TENNESSEEA “must” chapter in any history on the long campaign for equality for women would have to include
what happened in Tennessee in August 1920.
With 35 states having ratified the constitutional amendment granting women the right to vote, one
more state was needed. Tennessee took care of that and, in doing so, propped open doors of opportunity
previously closed to women.
State Representative Harry Burn cast the deciding vote, at the urging of his mother, Febb Burn. This all
happened only because the absolutely refuse-to-lose Tennessee suffragists demonstrated extraordinary
perseverance in delivering the message, carrying out the mission.
Proud monuments honoring what they did in their time remind us of what we must be doing in ours.
Frances Hannah Tranum wrote the words to the song “My Tennessee.”
“ AH, LET MY HEART BEAT TRUE TO THEE, AND SWELL WITH PRIDE FOR TENNESSEE.”

DREXEL.EDU/VISION2020
VISION 2020 IS A PROJECT OF
DECLARATION OF EQUALITYThis declaration, proclaimed by American women united in purpose,
commends to this nation the wisdom and obligation of achieving equality.
This declaration, inspired by the efforts of those who have come before,
recognizes that although equality is in sight, it is not yet fully in place.
This declaration, dedicated to enabling children to reach adulthood
with full expectations of equality, advances the belief that a true sharing
of leadership and responsibility among women and men will inspire
an unprecedented dimension of American excellence.
This declaration contends that:Without equality we cannot truly claim that we the people
are fairly self-governed and free to pursue happiness.
Equality is both a measure of our democracy and its hallmark. It is the
foremost feature of justice and it is descriptive of our common humanity.
There is an urgency to this matter because equality delayed is opportunity denied.
This declaration, signed by willing hands pledged to devote their time, talent
and tenacity to the fulfillment of all that equality promises, is now submitted
to the hearts, minds and collective conscience of the American people.
With faith in humanity, we resolve to fulfill the
promise of our nation and the potential of American women.
