Evidence, Data and a Case Study

Tesla Vehicle Logs – Diagnostic Data• History

– Diagnostic data is maintained in the car and updated locally every second

– Periodically updated to the cloud.– Also updates locally when an event

occurs information is reported – think “Freeze Frame”• This may be any number of changes

– Tesla makes this information available upon authority • LE can contact them with a search

warrant

– Info is delivered as a .pdf

Tesla Diagnostic Data• Tesla responded within one week with

the data

• Response included all of the requested data along with this:

• “You may find it relevant to refer to the attached page from the Model S Owner’s Manual, which explains, ‘…”

• Please see attached page from the Owner’s Manual

Tesla Diagnostic Data• EDR Data available at time of collision was just the telematics

• Good for Law Enforcement

• Warrant sent to Tesla directly with specific information requested• Speed • Brake switch• Accelerator Pedal• Steering Wheel Angle• Forward Looking Brake Assist• Be careful what you ask for, if you ask for it all, you get it all!
