Last year, our Bridges Coaches traveled over 50,000 miles to see their youth. Those miles highlight one of the many reasons we created the Bridges to Success program: too often older youth are placed in group or institutional settings all across Virginia simply because there are not enough placement options for them locally. You can imagine how difficult this is for teenagers, and why we work so hard to make sure that CASA is in their lives.

Thanks to you and your support, Piedmont CASA has always gone the extra mile. In the two years I have been Board Chair, the newly-founded Trauma-Informed Community Network has flourished. In the coming year you will hear more about the leadership team we are establishing with the Courts and the Departments of Social Services to build awareness of trauma-informed care, the power of resilience, and their life-changing potential for child abuse and neglect cases.

In January 2020, I will retire as Chair. Many of you already know my successor. She has served as a Piedmont CASA Supervisor, Development Director, Interim President, and Board Member. Rachel Lloyd Miller’s extraordinary commitment to this organization ensures that Piedmont CASA will continue to go the extra mile for children in our communty who have been abused and neglected.

Core Mission Support is Piedmont CASA’s investment in key infrastructure - those areas upon which our mission depends: strong, strategic finance and accounting, progressive human resources, capable and responsive board governance, engaged development and fundraising. Program Services are all built around and supported by the Core Mission Support.

• 100% of our children remained free from founded re-abuse while being served by CASA Volunteers.

• No children re-entered the dependency court system within one year of case closure.

• CASA Volunteers and/or their Supervisors attended 526 hearings.

• CASA Volunteers submitted 159 court reports to judges.

• Based on careful research, these court reports contained 916 recommendations in the best interest of the children we serve.

• The courts accepted 91% of those recommendations: 831 out of 916.

• In FY19, 91 young victims of abuse and neglect were referred to Piedmont CASA by the courts and assigned CASA Volunteers.

• Combined with children already being served, 273 children and youth had the advocacy of 117 CASA Volunteers.

• CASA Volunteers dedicated 11,490 hours to advocating for children and youth.

• They donated another 2,992 hours in pre-service and ongoing training.

• At the end of the year, no foster child had to navigate the system without a CASA Volunteer.

MARCH 18, 2019Panelists were author John Grisham, Cavalier basketball legend Barry Parkhill, UVA President Jim Ryan, and Macon “The Squid” Gunter, Chief Statistician for the UVA Sports Network. Dave Koehn and Rachel Ryan emceed. The event took place in the Pavilion at the Boar’s Head Resort. Aside from raising funds for Piedmont CASA, the Bracket Breakfast increased awareness about the plight of abused and neglected children in our community.

Piedmont CASA President Alicia Lenahan is flanked by Will Merritt and Justin Deel of VDOT Culpeper, who hosted the Fore Kids Golf Tournament. At the 11:00 shotgun start, 19 teams took off, fanning out across the Old Trail Golf Club in Crozet, Virginia. At the end of the day, Roudabush, Gale & Associates won first place, Concrete Stormwater won second, and A. Morton Thomas and Associates won third.
