The Acidity of Soda on Teeth
AbstractSoda is delicious ,but did you know the
phosphoric acid in soda, which keeps it nice and bubbly, absorbs the calcium in your teeth?
Even sugar free sodas still contain the same amount of phosphoric acid.
QuestionDoes the color of the soda affect the erosion
of the teeth enamel?
Dark Soda Light Soda
PurposeTo determine which type of soft drink
corrodes the teeth more and this helps us know which one is more harmful.
HypothesisIf the color of the soda affects it’s acidity,
then I think the darker soft drinks will be more corrosive than the lighter sodas.
IntroductionInstead of teeth, we’ll be using dirty pennies.
They’re all from the same year, and we’ll use the sodas to clean them.
The more acidity the soda has, the cleaner the penny will look after a week.
Materials1 bottle of Coca Cola1 bottle of Pepsi1 bottle of Dr. Pepper1 bottle of Sprite1 bottle of Mountain Dew1 cup of distilled waterSix plastic cupsSix dirty penniesJournal to jot your resultsMeasuring cupPermanent marker for labeling
Method Process1. Fill a plastic cup with 1 cup (measured) of the
Coca Cola soft drink. Make sure each cup is labeled with the soda that is contained within it.
2. Repeat step one with the remainder of the cups, filling each one with a different soft drink and finally, the water.
3. Drop each of the tarnished pennies in a separate cup. The penny that is soaking in the cup of distilled water will be your control.
4. Experiment will last for a week and take note of all you discoveries.

ConclusionOur hypotheses was correct. The darker colored sodas will remove the
tarnish from the pennies better than the lighter colored sodas.
The color of the soft drink does determine the acidity of the soda itself.
How it can be usedThis conclusion can help people understand
that drinking too much dark soda can quickly lead to corroded teeth.
Also tells us that drinking lighter colored sodas will just slowly but surely corrode your teeth
New QuestionDo the lighter sodas change color as the
tarnish is removed? How does this compare to how much tarnish
is on the penny that is soaking in the distilled water?
Is one type of soda visibly reducing the amount of tarnish on the penny?
