The Foundation has helped to make TartanWeek become the most successful promotion of Scotland overseas and its involvement in largerinitiatives, such as the Scottish Coalition, has been of great benefit to Scotland.

BackgroundThe Wallace Award®, the premium asset of The American-
Scottish Foundation®, was fi rst awarded in 1970, and was awarded
annually thereafter until 1988.
The Foundation revived the Wallace Award® on April 4TH, 2000.
The recipient was then Senate Republican Majority Leader, Trent
Lott, a Buchanan. Senator Lott received the Award on the steps
of the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. in the presence of
Senators from both sides of the aisle. The Award was given in
recognition of Senator Lott’s sponsorship of Senate Resolution
155. Resolutions adopted unanimously by The Senate in 1997
and The House of Representatives in 2005, established April 6,
in perpetuity, as National Tartan Day.
On April 5TH, 2001, the Foundation presented the Award to Sir
Sean Connery, again on the steps of the Capitol Building, in
the presence of Vice President Dick Cheney, and Senators from
both sides of the aisle. The Award was given in recognition of Sir
Sean’s longstanding interest in and devotion to Scotland.
The proposed 2002 Award ceremony, again scheduled for
Washington, D.C., was cancelled due to the death of The Queen
Mother. There was no Award in 2003.
On April 6TH, 2004, the Foundation presented the Award
to individuals representing three generations of the Forbes’
family. In recognition of the family’s devotion to Scotland and
the advancement of its interests. Bertie Charles (B.C.) Forbes’
Award, presented “in memoriam”, was accepted by his son,
Wallace F. Forbes; Malcolm S. Forbes’ Award, also presented “in
memoriam”, was accepted by Moira Forbes, daughter of Steve
Forbes; and the Award to each of Steve Forbes, Timothy C.
Forbes, Christopher Forbes, Robert L. Forbes and Moira Forbes
Mumma was accepted by Christopher Forbes.
On April 5th, 2005, the Foundation presented the Award
to Donald and Eleanor Taffner. The Award was given in
recognition of the Taffners’ long-standing support of the Arts
and, in particular, The Glasgow School of Art. The Taffners were
the fi rst Award recipients to be selected who had no ancestral
connection to Scotland.
HonoreesThe Wallace Award® was originally conceived as a singular
opportunity to recognize the extraordinary diversity of
contribution that Scots have made to the world; and, in
particular, to recognize one or more living citizens or residents
of the United States of Scottish descent for their individual
contributions to the well being of this country.
The Foundation has now expanded the Award’s reach to include,
in addition to Americans, Canadians and Scots, deceased as well
as living, who have made an important contribution to
American-Scottish relationships.
Wallace Award® recipients are selected by the Board of Directors
of The American-Scottish Foundation® from nominations
submitted by interested groups.
PurposesTo recognize living citizens or residents of the United States
or Canada of Scottish descent for outstanding achievement or
signifi cant contribution in their fi eld of endeavor.
To recognize “in memoriam” citizens or residents of the United
States or Canada of Scottish descent for outstanding achievement
or signifi cant contribution in their fi eld of endeavor.
To recognize living Americans or Scots for their contribution to
American-Scottish relationships.
Wallace Award®

EventThe Award event, since its revival in 2000, has been held on or
about National Tartan Day (April 6TH). The event has a
notable Scottish theme with the recipient(s) making a short
acceptance speech. (The recipient’s attendance is expected).
The event is held in a prestigious location in the presence of
local dignitaries, and other VIP guests, members of national
societies, Scottish commercial and philanthropic organizations,
the sponsors, invited guests, Foundation members and their
guests. A media presence is also actively solicited.
Prior to 2000, the event took place in New York City. In 2000
and 2001, the Award ceremony took place in Washington, D.C.
on the steps of the Capitol Building, as part of the National
Tartan Day ceremonies in that city. For security reasons this
location is no longer available.As in 2006, the Award ceremony
in 2004 and 2005 took place in New York City.
The Foundation is also considering hosting the event in
other U.S. cities in the future where there is a strong local
organization with whom to co-sponsor the event.
The Foundation is a national organization with
a national membership.
DatePrior to the introduction of Tartan Day, the event was held in
the Fall. Since its revival it has been held in conjunction with
National Tartan Day ceremonies that take place on or about
April 6TH.
ProceedsThe event is not traditionally designed to fundraise for the
Foundation. The sole purposes of the event are to raise the
profi le of the American-Scottish community in the U.S. and
to recognize the outstanding achievement and contribution of
individuals of Scottish descent and those who have signifi cantly
benefi tted Scotland. A fundraising component consitent with
the dignity of the Award has been added in this Anniversary
year. Proceeds will go to benefi t Scottish interest charities based
in both the U.S. and Scotland as well as to meet the ongoing
fi nancial needs of the Foundation, particularily to fund the
Anniversary projects referred to in this Journal.

Burns Night
The evening, held at a prestigious private New York City club on Friday, January 27, 2006, introduced participants to the music, wisdom and fun of Robert Burns. Traditional elements included the “Piping in” of the guests and the haggis, the “address to the haggis,” “loyal toasts”, a rousing rendition of Burns’ songs, and a closing selection of reels. The evening entertainment featured Caledon, three highly acclaimed Scottish tenors under the direction of Michael Barnett. Caledon has appeared in a number of prestigious locations including the Sydney Opera House, the Scottish Parliament Buildingand the U.N.
British Memorial Garden
The British Memorial Garden Trust, Inc., a 501 (c) (3) organization under the Patronage of HRH Prince Charles and overseen by the British Consulate-General and the St. George’s Society of New York, in conjunction with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, is transforming a plot of land in Hanover Square, New York City, into the British Memorial Garden Trust. The Garden, a gift from the British community to the people of New York, will serve as a living memorial to those British and Commonwealth nationals who lost their lives in the Two World Wars and in the attack on the World Trade Center.
The Foundation sourced different Scottish stone (Caithness and Moray) for the Garden’s pathways and borders. An offi cial ceremonial laying of two Caithness Corner Stones, “bricks”, for the Garden’s paths took place at The British Memorial Garden on April 6, 2005, Tartan Day. The ceremony was followed by a VIP reception, co-hosted by the Foundation and the British Memorial Garden Trust.
Another “Scotland in the Garden” event, as it is known, celebrating the Garden took place this year, again on April 6, Tartan Day, featuring a free concert of Scottish music by The Strathclyde Fire & Rescue Pipe Band, The Inverclyde Juvenile Pipe Band, and Scocha at
Old Slip Park.
Tartan Day Parade
Under the sponsorship of the National Tartan Day New York Committee, Inc., of which the Foundation is the founding member, thousands celebrated the richness of Scottish music and culture as the Tartan Day Parade, now in its seventh year, marched up Sixth Avenue from 44TH Street to 59TH Street on April 8TH. Spectators of all ages, waving fl ags and hometown banners, lined up along the fi fteen-block Sixth Avenue route to watch thousands of traditionally clad Pipe Bands and other musicians from Scotland, the United States and around the world, all dressed in their Tartan Day – best, lead the Parade of dignitaries. Sponsors and their guests had a bird’s eye view from atop of one of the Tartan clad double decker buses.

An intimate Reception for ASF members and their guests, for visiting and local dignitaries, and sponsors and their guests was held immediately following the conclusion of the Parade at “Scotland House”TM, the home of the Foundation.

John Muir Golf Tournament
The John Muir Golf Tournament celebrated its 10TH Anniversary this year. The Tournament was created by the Foundation at the request of the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation to honor John Muir, the Scots born environmentalist. John Muir is most widely known as of the Father of U.S. National Park Service and the Sierra Club. The Tournament, hosted by the Foundation, and supported by New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, Friends of Van Cortlandt Park, and American Golf, is played on The Van Cortlandt Golf Course, the oldest public course in the country.
Tournament proceeds benefi t a summer employment program for selected local high school students.
Andrew Carnegie New York Branch Library Centennials
In 1901, Scots-Born Andrew Carnegie donated $5.2 million to the New York Public Library for the construction of 67 Branch Libraries. Annual Centennial celebrations highlighting aspects of Carnegie’s life and his devotion to philanthropy, education and world peace began in December 2001 at the Yorkville Branch Library and will conclude in 2029. The most recent celebration took place at the Webster Branch Library on October 12th. Together, The American-Scottish Foundation® and the New York Public Library have to date hosted eight celebrations.

Diaspora Gift A national and international initiative to present a tapestry to the Scottish Parliament on behalf of organizations representing the Scottish Diaspora. The tapestry, to be designed by a well respect Scottish artist of international stature and hung in a publicly accessible space in the new Parliament Building, will be woven by the internationally acclaimed Dovecot Studios in Edinburgh. The principal of such a gift has been accepted by the Parliament. A particularly positive outcome will be the illustrative, interpretive and educational material associated with the tapestry project, developed for a number of different audiences, helping to further articulate the message of Scotland’s contribution to the world and reinforcing a sense of pride in succeeding generations of Scots.
Demographic StudyA study, commissioned by the Foundation on behalf of organizations both within the American-Scottish community and in Scotland, of the demographics of the American-Scottish community, is to be conducted by Campbell Rinker, a leading producer of quality market research for the non-profi t industry.Among the study’s objectives are: To investigate fi ndings set forth in “The Millionaire Next Door,” which state: “The Scottish ancestry group make up only 1.7 percent of all households, but it accounts for 9.3 percent of the millionaire households in America.”
“Hollywood Librarian, Librarians in Film and Society” DocumentaryAs part of its recognition of Andrew Carnegie’s role in the building of libraries globally, the Foundation is supporting, the development of a documentary fi lm entitled the “Hollywood Librarian, Librarians in Film and Society”. The fi lm, as its title suggests, focuses on the critically important role of librarians in the community.
The Foundation’s involvement was motivated by its desire to emphasize Scotland’s historic and continuing commitment to education; most profoundly epitomized by Andrew Carnegie’s commitment to Libraries and to let Americans to know that Andrew Carnegie was a Scot.
At the Foundation’s request, Ms. Seidl, the fi lmmaker, agreed to incorporate a segment about Andrew Carnegie’s background and commitment to libraries in her documentary.
The Foundation, in turn, agreed to assist Ms. Seidl develop funding for both the overall project and the proposed Carnegie segment.
ASF’s introduction of Ms. Seidl to Dr. Vartan Gregorian, President of the Carnegie Corporation of New York, secured a $75,000 grant for the project.

As a former Wallace Award® recipient, I am most proud of both that honor and my

Lady Malcolm Douglas-Hamilton, C.B.E.FOUNDER AND PRESIDENT EMERITUSThe American-Scottish Foundation, Inc.
Lady Malcolm Douglas-Hamilton was born Natalie Scarritt Wales in Cohasset, Massachusetts in 1909. She grew up in Boston and New York City. From her earliest years, she was a generous, outgoing and enthusiastic person of drive and great optimism.
Her career began in 1939 when she learned of the devastation and isolation of Great Britain in the early years of World War II. She took the train to Washington, D.C. to ask the British Ambassador, Lord Lothian, what Britain needed that ordinary Americans could supply.
Lord Lothian inquired, and the answer came back: knitted Balaclava helmets for the merchant navy, who were suffering from exposure and freezing temperatures shepherding convoys in the North Atlantic. These head coverings needed to be of a uniform, almost-
black navy blue wool of a certain weight, and knitting instructions would be supplied. Undaunted (a quality that served her for the rest of her life), Natalie c1ontacted wollen mills--principally Burlington Mills--and asked them to supply several tons, not “at cost” because, as she cheerfully noted, “I have no money”, but for free.
The wool was supplied, the knitting began and Natalie organized, Bundles for Britain, which eventually had over two and one-half million men and women as members, knitting helmets, sweaters, gloves; rolling bandages and packing medicines; creating clothing drives, blood drives and canned food drives across the country. She asked Buckingham Palace for something she could auction off in a nationwide raffl e to raise money. Queen Elizabeth (later the Queen Mother, sent a red, white and blue (rubies, diamonds and sapphires) cigarette case and a piece of shrapnel from the bomb that hit Buckingham Palace. Natalie maintained a cordial relationship with the Queen, who years later as Queen Mother became the Royal Patron of The American Scottish Foundation. Later, Natalie joined the Staff of THE NEW YORK TIMES as assistant to the Publisher.
In 1946, Natalie was made an honorary Commander of the British Empire for her services in World War II. She was the fi rst non-British woman to be so honored.
1947, faced with the growing Soviet threat in Europe, Natalie and her husband, Edward Bragg Paine, created Common Cause, Inc, the fi rst “American citizens organization to combat communism”. She turned her dynamism and organizational skills once again to a cause she believed in, raising funds, holding seminars
, shipping food during the Berlin airlift and using American legal interventions to shelter
refugees—sometimes tin her own home. Her husband died suddenly in 1951.--...._In that same year, as a young American widow she went to England If.) to make a speech about Communism in the House of Commons. She met Lord Malcolm Douglas-Hamilton, the Member of Parliament for Inverness-shire and an ardent ant communist. She later married him, and they lived in Scotland
and England for several years. -Returning to the United States, Lord and Lady Malcolm together
created The American-Scottish Foundation, Inc. in 1956, to strengthen the historic ties between Scotland and the United States in all areas--educational, cultural, social, genealogical, philanthropic, scientifi c and economic.
Articulate, enthusiastic and encouraging, Lady Malcolm worked with Lord Malcolm to further the goals of the Foundation until he was tragically killed with his 21-year-old son, Niall, in an airplane crash in Cameroon, West Africa in 1964.
Devastated by her loss, Lady Malcolm found some strength in continuing Lord Malcolm’s dreams for the Foundation. In the early 1970s she organized “Scotland Week” in New York City. She obtained permission from the Fifth Avenue Association to have crossed American and Scottish fl ags on every other lamppost. She asked the famous Fifth Avenue shops between 60th and 34th Streets to give their front windows (and inside) a Scottish motif. There was a 2-day Economic Meeting with Scottish and American economists and professors. There were Scottish concerts, pipe bands, the Scottish Symphony, an art exhibit and many parties during the gala week.
Lady Malcolm also inaugurated The Scottish Ball, one of the most beautiful, memorable and “fun” events of the social year. It was held, at the Hotel Plaza, and was eagerly anticipated each year. She also created The Wallace Award, the single most prestigious event in the Scottish-American calendar celebrating outstanding achievement primarily of American – Scots.
Lady Malcolm was particularly enthusiastic about creating Scotland House, a special dream of Lord Malcolm’s, to be a central gathering place for American Scots, visiting Scots, students, people seeking their Scottish roots--a place for all. The fi rst Scotland House was opened in the mid-70s at 124 East 39th Street by New York City Mayor Abraham Beame, and was an instant success. Lectures, movies, seminars, ceilidhs, dances and teas were held in a comfortable atmosphere with a large Scottish-American library, and Scottish products such as sweaters, tweeds, jewelry and china were for sale. A later Scotland House was on Fifth Avenue in the 80s and of course the present Scotland House at 575 Madison Avenue.
Lady Malcolm retired from the Foundation in 1989. She had two daughters, six grandchildren and 11 grandchildren and is currently enjoying her retirement in Stillwater, New Jersey.

Alasdair Hutton has been a supporter of the Foundation for some years. He helped present the Tartan Ceremony at National Tartan Day in Washington DC in the Millennium year and is looking forward to playing an active part in the celebrations for the Foundation’s 50th Anniversary.
Alasdair is a seasoned presenter of large public events, he has been narrator of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo for fi fteen years and regularly presents similar shows and concerts all over the United Kingdom and abroad including the United States. He also writes and narrates videos & DVDs including those for such historic attractions in Scotland as Edinburgh Castle, Stirling Castle, Urquhart Castle and Iona Abbey.
Alasdair was the fi rst Scottish Member elected to the European Parliament in 1979 to represent the South of Scotland and is now the Convener (Mayor) of Scottish Borders Council.
He was a volunteer paratrooper in the Scottish Parachute Battalion for 32 years and is now a member of the Queen’s Body Guard for Scotland – the Royal Company of Archers. He is also Honorary Colonel of the Lothian and Borders Battalion, Army Cadet Force and Vice Chairman of the Borders Area Executive of the Royal British Legion Scotland, Vice President of the John Buchan Society and a Member of the
Council of the Edinburgh Sir Walter Scott Club.
Piper – Pipe Major Jim Motherwell, B.E.M Jim Motherwell joined The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders as a piper in 1984 and became Pipe Major in 1993. During this time He played for President Bush Senior in the White House and Pope John Paul in the Vatican. He has also met the young President Bush and President Clinton. In 1993 Jim took the Pipeband on a three month tour of the USA playing in 76 cities in 42 states. In 1997 he left the Argylls and moved to Buckingham Palace to become personal piper to HM The
Queen, the tenth person to hold the position since 1843. During this time Jim would spend most days with the Queen and members of her family at private audiences, garden parties, and also played for the Queen every weekday at 9 in the morning. Jim left the Palace two years ago and became a teacher at Eton College where he still works now. In May this year Jim and a classical group called the Opra Babes sold out the Royal Albert Hall.
