The Bellringer
When I came to you, brothers and sisters, I did not come proclaiming the mystery of God to you in lofty words or wis-dom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified. 1 Corinthians 2:1-2
Hello! This is Pastor Matthew Agee, and I’ve been asked to share a bit about myself, my family, and my call to serve as Pastor of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Dubuque.
I suppose I can begin with my last name: it is pronounced “AY-jee” – If you forget how to say it, don’t worry, I’ve heard just about every version of it possible. I was born and raised in a logging town called Kelso in Southwest Wash-ington State. It’s located on the rainy side of the state, along the Columbia River about a half hour north of Portland, Oregon.
I am an adult convert to Christianity and was baptized at age 26. Culturally, though, I’m a Norwegian Lutheran.
I attended college at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA, graduating in 2002. While I was at PLU, I met my wife Jennifer – we were married in 2003. We moved to the Seattle area and I worked at a local bank, while Jennifer began her career as an editor.
While I was working at the bank I began to hear the call to ordained ministry in the ELCA. I started the candidacy process in the NW Washington Synod, and enrolled at Seattle University to study for my M.Div.
After a year of working full time and going to school full time, plus commuting through Seattle traffic, the idea of Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa kept popping up. This was, of course, impossible. Iowa? Everyone we knew or were related to lived in Washington! But, the Holy Spirit kept at us, and in 2008 we packed up, sold our house, and moved to Dubuque – and it was one of the best experiences of our lives. We loved our time in Dubuque, and returned to visit frequently. In fact, it was the first “road trip” we took with our daughter when she was 3 months old!
I graduated from Wartburg in 2012, and received a call to serve as pastor of Church of Our Saviour in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. It is a beautiful stone church and when you walk in the first thing you’ll notice is the handmade German Tracker Organ that was installed in the 1980s.
Jennifer is an editor and works freelance for various clients. While in Dubuque, she earned an MA in theology, and this past fall published her senior thesis as a book called “Systematic Mythology.” I am happy to report she’s way smarter than me. In May of 2014, we welcomed our daughter Jane – she attended a local 4K program last year, and will begin kindergarten in Dubuque this fall.
In my spare time you can probably find me reading books on history, or completely engrossed in some totally random new hobby, which I will no doubt be very happy to tell you all about. I love potlucks, music, reading westerns, and am skilled at turning any conversation back to Star Wars.
That’s a very broad outline, but I am pretty sure we’ll have a chance to get to know each other soon. I have been pray-ing for you, and give thanks to God for the chance to serve the people of St. Peter. I’ll see you all in a few weeks.
May the Peace of Christ be with you all.
Pastor Matthew Agee
