• What is a flood? The inundation of a normally dry area caused by high flow, or overflow of water in an established waterhouse, such as a river, stream, or drainage ditch; or ponding of water at or near the point where rain fell.

• What is a flash flood?A flood which follows within a few hours (usually less than 6 hours) of heavy or excessive rainfall, dam or leeve failure, or the sudden release of water impounded by an ice jam.

Flooding may last for days, weeks, or even months

Flash Flood will last for hours, less than a daymost often caused by rainfall in a short period of time

The Importance of Stormwater Management

• To prevent rainwater surcharge and overflow by limiting the discharge of the surface water run-off to the external drainage.

• PUB Guidance: Singapore Standard SS 593: Code of Practice for Pollution Control

Blue Roof: is the New Green RoofRainwater Regulations

• Rainwater from roofs / open spaces and any unused / uncontaminated rainwater from the rainwater collection system are not allowed to be discharged into a watercourse or other collection medium in accordance to SS593: Code of Practice for Pollution Control.

• The Rainwater collection tank shall be mosquito proof in accordance to the “Guidelines on Mosquito Prevention in Domestic Rainwater Collection System for Non-Potable Uses” from NEA.gov.sg.

The Importance of waterproofing system

• No rainwater contamination before collection in accordance to PUB guidance and Singapore Standard SS 593.

• Neutrality of the waterproofing membrane in direct contact with water.

• Detention of rainwater and stormwater: reduction peak runoff

• Reduce flood risks: on large events with retention measures

• Blue roofs attenuate peak runoff on large storm events in simple and effective way

• Cooling effect to be measured in ºC on period of time: 6months, 1year and more with results and impact on air conditioning maintenance cost in the overall building.

• Green and Blue roofs as aesthetic, refreshing and natural design on new accessible vertical living spaces in hot climates
