The Bones• Our bones, together

make up a structure called our skeleton.

• Bones in the body are very important because they keep us together, in a structured, human form.

• When we are born we have about 350 bones! As we get older, our soft bones grow together, making hard ones. When we are an adult, we have only about 206 bones in our body!

Why it is Important:• Bone Marrow is a very

important part of the bone. It is a goo, in the spongy bone.

• This little factory-like system inside the bone, makes new red blood cells to make sure the body keeps healthy.

• Without bones, we can’t grow tall, write, or play soccer outside.

• Bones don't work alone. They need help from the muscles, joints and tendons.

How can we keep our bones healthy?

• We can eat healthy food that contains calcium and magnesium to strengthen bones.

• We can drink lots of water to help the bones create new red blood cells.

• We can be careful when you are playing not to hurt or break a bone.

The Muscles:• Muscles are made of

thin protein fibres in the body. They pull on the joints, allowing us to move.

• Muscles are connected to bones by cords, called tendons. Tendons allow the muscles to pull on bones, like a puppet master can pull the strings on a puppet to make it move.

• Wiggle your fingers. You can see the tendons on the back of your hand as they work.

What else about Muscles?• The human body has

more than 650 muscles!

• This makes up half of a person's body weight!

• Muscles also help your body with other functions- to grow and remain strong. Even chewing food and digesting it!
