Background

Project Coordinator, Vancouver Community College

Managed a federal government-funded employment resource centre for 5 years, during which time I began to learn and adopt Web 2.0 tools in my work.

I’ve presented on this topic in various training sessions and conference workshops.

The Social Web (Web 2.0)

Community: Building relationships, networking Collaboration: Working together to achieve

common goals Contribution: Adding to the common knowledge

base

Are these functions relevant to career service and education?

4

Common Web 2.0 Tools

Blogs (or weblogs) Wikis Social Networks

Has anyone used or heard of these tools before?

5

Blogs

You don’t need to be “technically savvy” to create and operate a blog.

Blogs are like journals - messages are posted and organized in chronological order (most recent posting first).

You can post text, audio, video, picture. Viewers can comment on your postings (if you let

them). Blogs can be managed by one person, or a group

of people.

Online tools do not replace the human connection. On the contrary, it strengthens the human connection by extending our capacity across time and space.

Learning by doing - you won’t understand these tools unless you use them.
