Mass Intentions
The custom of requesting a priest to offer the Mass for a specific intention, even when one cannot be physically present at the Mass, is a longstanding tradition in the Church. This is because the Church considers the Mass as the greatest possible prayer of intercession insofar as it is the perfect offering of Christ to the Father by making present the paschal mystery of his death and resurrection.
You may request a Mass Intention by visiting the Cathedral Center Office. Mass Intentions are posted in
the Parish Bulletin, and on our website: www.thecathedralofstmary.org
SUNDAY FEBRUARY 2
Candlemas-Presentation of the Lord-
Candelaria
PLEASE BRING YOUR CANDLES TO
BE BLESSED AT ALL MASSES
On the second of February, the Church celebrates the
festival of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin, which
may be considered as the conclusion of the series of
feasts that center around the stable of Bethlehem.
Christmas Day presents to us the birth of the Redeem-
er; the Epiphany commemorates His manifestation to
the Gentiles; and the Purification reminds us of the
offering of our Saviour in the temple by His blessed
Mother, as the Victim who should reconcile God and
man. This day has been chosen by the Church for a
very important ceremony, the solemn blessing of can-
dles, whence the day is often called Candlemas.
POPE FRANCIS HAS ESTABLISHED THE THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AS A DAY DEVOTED TO THE CELEBRATION, STUDY AND DISSEMINATION OF
THE WORD OF GOD.
SUNDAY 26 - SUNDAY OF THE WORD OF GOD Gospel Mt 4:12-23
When Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Gali-
lee. He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum by the sea, in
the region of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what had been said
through Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled: Land of Zebulun and
land of Naphtali, the way to the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of
the Gentiles, the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light,
on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death light has arisen.
From that time on, Jesus began to preach and say, “Repent, for the
kingdom of heaven is at hand.” As he was walking by the Sea of
Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter, and his
brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen. He
said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
At once they left their nets and followed him. He walked along from
there and saw two other brothers, James, the son of Zebedee, and his
brother John. They were in a boat, with their father Zebedee, mend-
ing their nets. He called them, and immediately they left their boat
and their father and followed him. He went around all of Galilee,
teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom,
and curing every disease and illness among the people.
MAY THE SUNDAY OF THE WORD OF GOD HELP HIS PEOPLE TO GROW IN RELIGIOUS AND INTIMATE FAMILIARITY WITH
THE SACRED SCRIPTURES. FOR AS THE SACRED AUTHOR TAUGHT OF OLD: “THIS WORD IS VERY NEAR TO YOU:
IT IS IN YOUR MOUTH AND IN YOUR HEART FOR YOUR OBSERVANCE” (DT 30:14).

WE MUST LIVE THE FAITH WITH OUR ACTIONS Christ has no body now but yours, no hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes through which Christ looks with compassion into this world. Yours are the feet with which Christ walks to do good. Yours are the hands with which Christ blesses the world. Simply stated, St. Teresa of Avila reminds us that we are the eyes, hands and feet of Christ. While some objects, such as statues, relics and crosses, are to be venerated as symbols of Christ, these objects can-not serve as the body of Christ in today’s world; but people can. St. Teresa of Avila’s quote is meant to show us that we are His eyes, hands and feet, and now we are to see, go and act on His behalf. It is a call to action to be in-struments of Jesus and to make God present in our everyday life. We witness the real hands and feet of Jesus in the work of the Archdiocese of Miami above and beyond the good work in our parishes. It is evident in our efforts to preserve the dignity of all human life, and in our commitment to the poor, homeless, needy, elderly and sick. It lives in the hearts and minds of the children in our schools and religious education programs, as well as those serving in our life-changing ministries and programs. And remarka-bly, it is witnessed in you when you support the Archbishop’s Charity and Development Drive (ABCD) by making it all possible. As a Catholic community, we embrace the call to action to make God present in all our lives. For many of us, our commitment to the Archdiocese of Miami, through the ABCD, allows us to be part of that active witness of our faith. The ABCD serves our community by giving hope to the hopeless, strengthening the faith of the discouraged and providing charity to those most in need. Today, I write to you to ask you to prayerfully consider how you can be the eyes, hands and feet of Jesus by ac-knowledging the vital role you play in our universal Church through the support of the ABCD. Your gift to the ABCD allows the Archdiocese of Miami to help those in need just as He calls us to. Please join me in mirroring the love of Christ by putting our faith into action and make a gift of hope today. Let us be One in Faith, One in Hope and One in Charity. It is not enough to say we are Christians: We must live the faith, not only with our words, but with our actions. Thank you and God bless you! Archbishop Thomas Wenski,
Archdiocese of Miami
