One day at school Mrs. Max said,
‘We must do a Christmas play.
All the children in my room
will be in the play.
There are 27 children.’

The children were pleased about
the play.
They all talked about who should
be in it.
Mary and Joseph.
Three kings.
Shepherds and sheep.
And there had to be angels.
3
‘What about a donkey?’
asked one boy.
‘What about the baby?’
asked another.
‘I want to be an angel and fly,’
said Anna.
‘My mother always says I am
a little angel.’
‘No one will fly,’ said Mrs. Max.

At home time, the children went
off with their mums and dads.
Mrs. Max had to work out who
would be who in the play.
Mary, Joseph and three kings:
1 + 1 + 3 = 5.
27 – 5 = 22.
22 children left over.
5
Five shepherds.
22 – 5 = 17.
17 children left over.
6
The five shepherds could have
two sheep each.
5 x 2 = 10.
17 – 10 = 7.
7 children left over. There could
be 7 angels singing. A doll could
be the baby.
There would be no donkey.
7
The next day, Mrs. Max put up
the list of names.
All the children had to learn what
to say and sing in the play. They
made pictures of the people
in the play.
At the end of term some of
the mums and dads came to see
the play. They all said it was
very good.
The end.
