IMMANUEL LUTHERAN CHURCH
WATERLOO, ILLINOIS
The Day of Pentecost
Saturday, May 30, 2020 // Sunday, May 31, 2020
5:30 pm // 9:00 am / 11:00 am / 1:00 pm
“Making more and stronger disciples of Jesus Christ
through the power of the Holy Spirit.”
1
Welcome to Immanuel!
Please turn off your cell phones and/or paging devices. Thank you!
If you are a guest, please fill out a guests' card located in the cardholder on
the back of each pew and then place it in the offering plate. We look forward to
meeting you!
Members, please help us love and care for one another by filling out an
attendance card. Remember to include all the members of your family who are
present in worship today. If you are communing, please check in the appropriate
place. Thank you for filling out an Attendance-Communion card every time you
attend Church.
We celebrate Holy Communion today! In this Supper of our Lord we
receive the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ under the earthly forms
of bread and wine for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our
faith. This Holy Communion is also a sign of our shared confession of the
Christian faith. If you have not communed with us before, please speak with one
of our pastors before doing so.
lmmanuel's Saturday evening service has no ushers and only uses the
chalice (common cup) during Holy Communion. If you have concerns about
using the chalice during Communion, we suggest you practice intinction. In this
practice, you dip the host (bread) into the wine. The communicant receives both
elements, but doesn't come into contact with the chalice.
During the Sunday communion service: If you’re not able to drink wine,
the lighter colored glasses in the center of the tray of individual cups contain
water with a drop of wine. These special glasses allow communicants to
celebrate the Lord’s Supper according to Christ’s institution, but have a very
small amount of alcohol.
Worship at lmmanuel is...
Christ Centered. We believe that at the heart of worship is the Good News
that God has rescued us from our sins through Jesus' death on the cross and
rising to life again.
Trinitarian. We believe that the object of worship is the only true God—The
Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Multigenerational. We believe that it is a great blessing for family members
to worship together. Taking seriously Jesus' words, "Let the little children come
to me and so not forbid them" (Mark 10:14), we encourage children to worship
with their parents and grandparents and provide resources such as children's
bulletins and children's sermons.
Eclectic. Eclectic means, "selecting what seems best of various sources." We
believe that we should strive to use the best hymns and practices that the church
has to offer. Our worship may include hymns written 500 years ago as well as
pieces written 5 months ago.
2
In preparation for worship we ask that you silence your cell phones and/or
paging devices. Thank you. The time before service begins can be a good time to
pray and prepare your heart and mind for worship. You will find helpful prayers
on the inside cover of the hymnal located in the pew in front of you.
Divine Service, Setting Four (Lutheran Service Book, pg. 203)
Preservice Music / Bells / Welcome Opening Hymn, LSB 650, “Holy Spirit, Ever Dwelling”
1 Holy Spirit, ever dwelling
In the holiest realms of light;
Holy Spirit, ever brooding
O’er a world of gloom and night;
Holy Spirit, ever raising
Those of earth to thrones on high;
Living, life-imparting Spirit,
You we praise and magnify.
2 Holy Spirit, ever living
As the Church’s very life;
Holy Spirit, ever striving
Through us in a ceaseless strife;
Holy Spirit, ever forming
In the Church the mind of Christ:
You we praise with endless worship
For Your gifts and fruits unpriced.
3 Holy Spirit, ever working
Through the Church’s ministry;
Quick’ning, strength’ning, and absolving,
Setting captive sinners free;
Holy Spirit, ever binding
Age to age and soul to soul
In communion never ending,
You we worship and extol.

Confession and Absolution
Please stand
P In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen. (Matthew 28:19b; [18:20])
P Our help is in the name of the Lord,
C who made heaven and earth. (Psalm 124:8)
P If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?
C But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared. (Psalm 130:3-4)
Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.
P Since we are gathered to hear God’s word, call upon Him in
prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord
Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider
our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that
we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot
free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people
let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly
Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God,
be merciful to me, a sinner. (Luke 18:13)
C Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and
lead us to everlasting life. Amen.
P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and
for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained
servant of Christ and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all
your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the
Holy Spirit. (John 20:19-23)
C Amen.
Service of the Word
Introit of the Day (Psalm 104:24,27-28,30; antiphon: Liturgical Text)
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful,
and kindle in them the fire of your love. Alleluia.
O LORD, how manifold are your works! In wisdom have you made them
all;
the earth is full of your creatures.
These all look to you,
to give them their food in due season.
When you give it to them, they gather it up;
when you open your hand, they are filled with good things.
When you send forth your Spirit, they are created,
and you renew the face of the ground.
4
Glory be to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and will be forever. Amen.
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful,
and kindle in them the fire of your love. Alleluia. Kyrie
Gloria in Excelsis

P The Lord be with you! (2 Timothy 4:22)
C And also with you!
P Let us pray…
C O God, on this day You once taught the hearts of Your
faithful people by sending them the light of Your Holy Spirit.
5

understanding in all things and evermore to rejoice in His
holy consolation; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord,
who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God,
now and forever. Amen.

Old Testament Reading, Numbers 11:24-30 24Moses went out and told the people the words of the LORD. And he gathered
seventy men of the elders of the people and placed them around the tent. 25Then
the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke to him, and took some of the Spirit
that was on him and put it on the seventy elders. And as soon as the Spirit rested
on them, they prophesied. But they did not continue doing it. 26Now two men
remained in the camp, one named Eldad, and the other named Medad, and the
Spirit rested on them. They were among those registered, but they had not gone
out to the tent, and so they prophesied in the camp. 27And a young man ran and
told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.” 28And Joshua the
son of Nun, the assistant of Moses from his youth, said, “My lord Moses, stop
them.” 29But Moses said to him, “Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all
the LORD’s people were prophets, that the LORD would put his Spirit on them!” 30And Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp.
After the reading:
L This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
Second Reading, Acts 2:1-21 1When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2And
suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it
filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3And divided tongues as of fire
appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4And they were all filled with
the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them
utterance. 5Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every
nation under heaven. 6And at this sound the multitude came together, and they
were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own
language. 7And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who
are speaking Galileans? 8And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native
language? 9Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia,
Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and
the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, 11both Jews and
proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the
mighty works of God.” 12And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one
another, “What does this mean?” 13But others mocking said, “They are filled
with new wine.” 14But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and
6
addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be
known to you, and give ear to my words. 15For these men are not drunk, as you
suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. 16But this is what was uttered
through the prophet Joel: 17“‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I
will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall
prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream
dreams; 18even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will
pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy. 19And I will show wonders in the
heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of
smoke; 20the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the
day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day. 21And it shall come to
pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’”
After the reading:
L This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
Please stand
Alleluia and Verse
Holy Gospel, John 7:37-39
P The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the 7th chapter.
C Glory to You, O Lord. 37On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If
anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. 38Whoever believes in me, as the
Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” 39Now this
he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as
yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
7
After the reading:
P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C Praise to You, O Christ.
Apostles' Creed
All: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and
earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was
conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was
buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again
from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right
hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will
come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the
communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection
of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Hymn of the Day, LSB 498, “Come, Holy Ghost, Creator Blest”
1 Come, Holy Ghost, Creator blest,
And make our hearts Your place of rest;
Come with Your grace and heav’nly aid,
And fill the hearts which You have made.
2 To You, the Counselor, we cry,
To You, the gift of God Most High;
The fount of life, the fire of love,
The soul’s anointing from above.
3 In You, with graces sevenfold,
We God’s almighty hand behold
While You with tongues of fire proclaim
To all the world His holy name.
4 Your light to ev’ry thought impart,
And shed Your love in ev’ry heart;
The weakness of our mortal state
With deathless might invigorate.
8
5 Drive far away our wily foe,
And Your abiding peace bestow;
With You as our protecting guide,
No evil can with us abide.
6 Teach us to know the Father, Son,
And You, from both, as Three in One
That we Your name may ever bless
And in our lives the truth confess.
D 7 Praise we the Father and the Son
And Holy Spirit, with them One,
And may the Son on us bestow
The gifts that from the Spirit flow!

LSB 625, “Lord Jesus Christ, Life-Giving Bread”
1 Lord Jesus Christ, life-giving bread,
May I in grace possess You.
Let me with holy food be fed,
In hunger I address You.
Prepare me well for You, O Lord,
And, humbly by my prayer implored,
Give me Your grace and mercy.
2 To pastures green, Lord, safely guide,
To restful waters lead me;
Your table well for me provide,
Your wounded hand now feed me.
Though weary, sinful, sick, and weak,
Refuge in You alone I seek,
To share Your cup of healing.
3 O bread of heav’n, my soul’s delight,
For full and free remission
I come with prayer before Your sight
In sorrow and contrition.
Your righteousness, Lord, cover me
That I receive You worthily,
Assured of Your full pardon.
4 I do not merit favor, Lord,
My weight of sin would break me;
In all my guilty heart’s discord,
O Lord, do not forsake me.
In my distress this comforts me
That You receive me graciously,
O Christ, my Lord of mercy!

2 O Source of uncreated light,
The bearer of God’s gracious might,

To sanctify us as we sing.
3 Giver of grace, descend from high;
Your sev’nfold gifts to us supply;
Help us eternal truths receive
And practice all that we believe;
Give us Yourself that we may see
The glory of the Trinity.
