The Distributor October 2017
Director’s Corner October 2017
We just returned from the International Model A Day at the Gilmore Museum in Hickory Corners, Michigan.
This was my fifth year going to Gilmore and being able to see the museum grow and see the Illinois Region
play a part in its success is very exciting. But more than that, to see how the Model A hobbyists worked together
to get Gilmore to where it is today is a testament to the hard work and dedication by this dedicated team of
enthusiasts from across this great country. If you are at all interested in classic cars, this is a place to put on
your list of sights to see. If you are interested in the Model A, the MAFFI Museum is a must-see.
I would like to thank Mike Keating for enlightening us all with his Tech Talk last month. Mike held an excellent
seminar on headlamps. Very informative-the only problem is, we needed more time!
Thank you also to Mike Kochevar for hosting the water blasting seminar with Dan Koepke. We are fortunate
to have so many talented Model A members in the Illinois Region that are willing to give their time and talent
for the benefit of the hobby.
November’s Tech Talk is going to be an interesting one. Author Laura Enright will be coming in to talk about
one of her books, “The Top 10 Book of Murderous Monsters, Midway Monsters, and Windy City Oddities”.
A very cool book and I’m sure that it will be a colorful discussion. Please invite anyone who may be interested.
Don’t forget to sign up for our fall tour to visit the collection of Randy Yockey on October 22nd. Also, see Dan
or Melinda Pritchett to sign up for our annual Turkey Dinner, on November 5th.
We have a large group off to Hersey this year. Safe travels to all of you and have a great time! We look forward
to the stories when you get back -Christine
We don’t want tradition. We want to live in the present and the only history that is worth a tinker’s damn is the history we
make today. – Henry Ford

4th of July Parades-John Dregenburg thanked all members who
participated in the 6 successful parades. We have already received
invitations from Skokie and Northbrook for 2018. In Skokie there
were 7,000 spectators, plus closed-circuit TV. What a great way to
show off Model A’s!
Illinois Region Picnic- Ken reported that it was the best and the
biggest picnic yet. The weather was perfect and there were 125
people in attendance. The Bingo was fun, but ruthless Thanks
again to the Krengers for letting us use their beautiful home.
The National Meet in Gettysburg- Chris reported that the meet was
wonderful, with perfect weather and a great turnout. It lasted until
3:00pm. A donation from the proceeds of the swap meet will be
presented at the Gilmore Museum on September 16. You will find
out what the donation totaled when you attend the presentation at
Gilmore.
Friendly Ford Customer Appreciation Day- Randy of Friendly
Ford held his 6th Customer Appreciation Day. 201 cars were
registered. Lunch was served and there were 10 Model A’s from
our club to show our support.

It is highly recommended that you make reservations as soon as
possible before all rooms are sold out.

Lyons for Jordan Bellars/Pollyanna Brewery Tour, Paul & Janet

contested seats for the board, it will be done by appointment. We
are in need of an editor. If anyone is interested, please speak to
Chris or any of our board members.

appreciate everone’s support.

SPOTTED! Winn Gillis tells us he was a long-time member of the
Illinois Region. He owns this very nice 1930 Tudor and lives in the
Andersonville neighborhood in Chicago. He’s had the car for about
thirty years. He bought the car in pieces, and did a complete restoration
with the help of fellow members. He has not driven the car in about two
years, but is hoping to again soon. Are there Model As in your
neighborhood that need to be coaxed out of retirement?
(right)-a fall tradition in the Chicago Tribune, John T. McCutcheon’s
“Injun Summer” ran from the days just before the Model T, and
remained popular up through the time of the first Mustang Cobra R.
First appearing on September 30, 1907, and making its last traditional
appearance on October 25, 1993, it has made appearances since due to
reader demand.
Happy Halloween & Welcome Fall 2017!

What Stories Is Your Car Trying to Tell You?
Clarence Cleveland Curtiss bought his 1929 Model A in 1938-and
drove it until his death in 2013. He dated and married one and only
girl, Dorothy, in that car. They met when he was 17 and she was
14, and were married for 56 years until she died in 1998. They
managed to log over 200,000 miles on that A over the many
decades of ownership. That Model A surely had some stories to
tell, but as Clarence explained to Hemmings Motor News in 2007,
as he’d spent some time watching the submarine races with
Dorothy, his friends joked, “You’re probably glad that car can’t
talk.”
Our Model As have surely seen a lot over the many miles and years
they have been around. Think about the history they have seen!
Sometimes, we are lucky, and our A’s release part of that history
with relative ease. I purchased my 1931 Tudor from a man named
Arnie Holthaus in 2014. Arnie had owned the car since 1949, and
had a bunch of photos as well as the invoice from the used car lot
he’d purchased it from (for $125), along with receipts for parts and
work he had done on the car right after he’d purchased it.
Researching your car’s history can be a challenge, but is also
rewarding when you uncover things. Maybe you’ve found an old
receipt of some kind, or a matchbook, kids toy, etc, under the seat
or behind an interior panel, that may reveal a trip to the store or a
vacation the car was used for in some past decade. Your car may
be your daily driver, a prized show winner, or a summer tourer-but
at some point, it was most likely someone’s car-their means of
getting to work and back, or out to dinner, or perhaps out on dates
for 56 years, like Clarence’s car was. Sometimes these items are
not only very interesting, but they can often add value to your car.
Did your Model A come with any clues to its past? We’d love to
see and share it with fellow enthusiasts!
Remember: The best way to keep peace in the family
is to wear car clothes to work on the car.

ON THE COVER: George Lettner’s 1931 Tudor Deluxe
My father, Morris Simon, sparked my interest in cars. He suggested that we buy a Model A to restore. We found an incomplete
car in Chicago for $300.00 in 1970. I decided that it might be a good idea to join the Illinois Region Model A Restorers Club. We
gained some experience working on Model A’s with this car, and sold it in 1972.
We then found a complete car in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. We paid $550.00 for this car, a 1931 Model A Tudor Deluxe. We
decided to do a complete, ground up restoration on the car by ourselves. As fate would have it, I met Ron Ehrenhofer during this
time, who was my auto mechanics teacher at Niles East High School. He was also a member of the club. It was an ideal situation,
as I was able to work on restoring Model A parts during class. I went away to college, leaving the unfinished Model A in the
garage. After graduation, I enlisted Ron to help with the final assembly. I’m now looking forward to keeping the Model A in the
family by encouraging my son to carry on the hobby. -George Lettner

Pineapple Pretzel Fluff Recipe by Linda Stanek, submitted by
Christine Rozny.
Ingredients-
1 cup coarsely crushed pretzels
½ cup butter or margarine, melted
1 cup sugar, divided
1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
1 can (20 ox) crushed pineapple, drained
1 carton (12 oz) frozen chipped topping, thawed.
In a bowl, combine pretzels, butter, and ½ cup sugar until creamy. Fold in
pineapple and whipped topping. Chill until serving. Break pretzel mixture
into small pieces and stir into pineapple mixture just before serving.
This recipe is easily doubled or tripled for a large group. I tripled it for the
picnic. I usually make this the day before and then just before serving, stir in
the pretzels so that they are crunchy in the fluff.
