In the beginning, I trained our initial B’nai Mitzvah.
In the summer of 1976, I began visiting the homes
of a few families to begin their children on their
way to becoming Bar Mitzvah.
Fairly soon, as we developed a whole line up
of boys and girls reaching the age of twelve and
ready for training, we hired a retired Cantor to
take on this all important work. The numbers
amazingly swelled to some sixty and seventy young
people in a given year. A Shabbat with three or
four B’nai Mitzvah was not unusual.
Well, things are coming full circle. In December, I
began working with the upcoming B’nai Mitzvah
who are scheduled to celebrate their Judaic
coming of age during Cantor Annelise’s maternity
leave. I’ve been looking forward to having this
special time with these young people. I am much
happier today with a more reasonable number of
B’nai Mitzvah a year where we can devote more
time and attention to each young person and their
family in the process of celebrating their special
day. I have said before, this is a good time to be
growing up in Ohev Shalom.
This is a wonderful and exciting time in our
community. As of my writing, Cantor has not yet
given birth. Over the past number of months, I
have witnessed what it means for a woman to
continue to work full time throughout pregnancy.
To say the least, it is not easy. Not at all. It is
quite a challenge and Cantor Annelise has done it
with utmost conscientiousness with all of her
synagogue responsibilities.
Our president, Rachel Saks, recently wrote in a
memo that we are Cantor Annelise and Alex’s local
extended family. With that, we all want to do
whatever we can to support them during this
wonderfully exciting time bound to also include
some sleepless nights. We look forward to sharing
in their joy in seeing their son grow up in our
community.
It is interesting that its been a few weeks since we
celebrated our last Bat Mitzvah but we have happily
had a string of baby namings. Most have been
followed by delightful Bubby Gourmet Shabbat
Luncheons so we can all share in the wonderful
Simcha. A number of these babies will soon be
entering the Infant Care of our Early Learning
Center and we can happily see our future right
before us. Each baby naming on the Bimah is a very
special joy that we celebrate with the family, our
community and the larger American Jewish
community. The American Jewish experience lives
on and our Ohev Shalom community continues to
prosper.
I hope you and your family had a bright and Happy
Hanukkah whether here at home or
away. Hopefully, we can take the light of the
Hanukkiah into 2017 and make it a brighter year for
ourselves, our loved ones, our community and for
our country.
My best to you and your family for a good 2017.
Our collective best to Cantor Annelise and Alex as
they are about to welcome their son into their lives.
Happy 2017!

Although my husband Steve and I have been
members of Ohev Shalom for thirty-three years,
our paths may not have crossed with all of you
over that time, so please indulge me as I share a
bit about us.
Our Ohev journey really began before we became
actual members when our daughter, Heather,
attended a two-year-old toddler class. We found
ourselves attending services and some events, and
became members when Heather began Hebrew
School in the Aleph class. Fast forward through
the years and as we found our home at Ohev, our
relationship with our community evolved.
Heather and our son Josh both attended Hebrew
School, became a Bar and Bat Mitzvah on our
Bima, and Heather became President of her
Confirmation class. We were so blessed that
both Heather and Josh were married under the
Chupah by Rabbi Perlstein, Josh marrying Rachel,
another Ohev Shalom Hebrew School alumnus.
Later, we all celebrated the baby namings of our
beautiful granddaughters, Hannah, Lila, and just
very recently Jordyn, on a Shabbat morning with our
Ohev clergy and family. Rabbi and Ohev Shalom
have certainly been with us for all of our life cycles,
both happy and unfortunately sad, and G-d willing
will continue to be.
We have certainly formed long-lasting friendships
and relationships through the years and our
involvement has pleasantly and enormously changed
and grown. In 2011 I responded to an email asking if
anyone was interested in forming a committee to
discuss inclusion practices at Ohev Shalom. As a
speech pathologist specializing in early intervention
and childhood language disorders, this was always
something that I had hoped would grow at Ohev. I
became the co-chairperson of Inclusion B’Kavod and
have proudly watched our mission and vision take
shape, form, and become engrained in all aspects of
our community. This ultimately led to a Director at
Large Position on the Board of Directors and now,
several years later, I am in the second year of my

Hi my name is Rebecca Reiter. I have
an older brother and a younger
brother. I also have two cats and a
fish. I am in 7th grade and go to
Richboro Middle School. My favorite
class is math class. I play soccer for
Patriot FC. Some of my other favorite
things to do are drawing and hanging
out with friends. This summer I went
to Camp Ramah in the Poconos. I
made so much progress with my
Hebrew learning and learned some fun
words. It is an all-around great
environment and the people there are
so nice. I have been a part of Ohev
since I was 2 years old. I can’t wait
until my Bat Mitzvah. I feel I am ready
and as the days get closer it becomes
more and more real to me that it is
actually happening.
I would like to thank my mom and dad. I would also like to thank my brothers. Most importantly I
would like to thank Cantor and Rabbi because without them I would not have learned all my prayers and
aliyot for my Bat Mitzvah.

For many of us, our synagogue is not only a place
to worship, but also a second home where,
whether we attend weekly or only on High Holy
Days, we see familiar faces and feel a sense of
belonging and community. That comfort,
companionship, support and warmth is what
attracted January’s Congregant of the Month, Iris
Segal and her family, to join and remain deeply
committed to Ohev Shalom.
Iris, husband Mort, and sons Lee and Scott moved
to Bucks County and joined Ohev Shalom in 1978.
Iris, who had been very active at their old shul,
Beth Tefillah Israel of Pennypack Park, began
volunteering at Ohev almost from the very start,
thanks to “the many opportunities to learn and
participate, not only religiously, but also for the
benefit of the synagogue.” Over the years, Mort
and Iris, who just celebrated their 57th wedding
anniversary, have celebrated many simchas at
Ohev, including Scottie’s Bar Mitzvah, all three
grandchildren’s B’nai Mitzvot and Confirmations
and Iris’ own Adult Bat Mitzvah and Confirmation.
Iris, a realtor, has been working in real estate since
1983, a career her father advised her to pursue
because it seemed “glamorous.” While she may not
be “Realtor to the Stars”, she has been of great help
and assistance to many in our congregation,
including Rabbi Perlstein and Cantor Paul.
Iris’ commitment to her Ohev Shalom family is many
-faceted. Her devotion is spiritual. A regular at
Shabbat morning services, Iris began reading Torah
on Yom Kippur in 1986 and continues to read on
that day each year. After reading Torah for
granddaughter Eryn’s Sukkot Bat Mitzvah, Iris added
annual Torah readings each Sukkot and on Pesach.
As a member of our choir since 1984, Iris’ beautiful
voice helps uplift us throughout the year and, of
course, on Yom Kippur, with her beautiful rendition
of Sim Shalom.
Iris is also dedicated to giving service. Always a
dedicated member of Sisterhood, Iris served as
Sisterhood co-President for three years. She has
served in many other ways, helping plan Cantor

This article is meant to share the basics of how
our finances at Ohev work. In the end, like any
good parsha, this article is meant to be a
conversation starter more than a question
answerer.
First, the basics of Ohev’s financial mechanics.
Ohev operates primarily (over 95%) based on
what we take in during any year. We have very
“modest” (that's a financial word for small) savings
that we refer to as our “endowment.” We pay a
mortgage with 24.375 years left, however it's a
commercial mortgage which means every 5 years
we essentially have to reapply. We take in money
from dues, donations, and fees.
We budget (meaning we estimate) how much
money we'll take in. We make assumptions about
how many members will join or depart. We
budget for fundraising based on how things did in
the prior year and make similar informed
estimates for other things. Our expenses are
budgeted in the same manner. We make
contractual commitments to honor other items
that are hard to predict cost in any given year
(such as snow removal expenses) that are our
best guess based on the past several years
experience.
We review monthly reports of accounts payable
and receivables. We also try to monitor our
budget to actual to make sure we know how we
are doing. We project our cash flow in a very
detailed way because Ohev does not have large
working capital reserves. Our monitoring is not
perfect, but we try to improve it every year.
I'd like to share a few specific insights that help guide
my decision making. When a fundraising event does
$27k of revenue and $17k of expenses, earning us
$10k of net income - that is a very incomplete
picture of how we did. If we budgeted $20k of net
income for that event at the start of the year, even
though it was probably wonderful and people
worked hard to make it so nice, it turned out to be
not such a financial success. That's a hard
conversation to have right after everyone has
worked so diligently on an event, but a necessary
one.
Over the years we have created a lot of processes
and rules with a clear goal of being fair. This has
meant that we recognize the differences in our
members and accommodate their unique needs.
The downside is that we have created many
complex ways of doing things. We know that
complex things are hard to get right. We have been
working to simplify wherever possible.
Our bank requires that we earn more money than
we spend. If we don't we are in default. Sometimes
we find ourselves “wanting” to do something (spend
some $$, waive a fee) but we ultimately have to
ensure we meet our commitment to the bank.
Hopefully, no one is reading this last paragraph as
finance discussions also serve as great sleep aids.
But if you have more questions, just ask and your
finance team is happy to answer.

The Japanese Lover by Isabel Allende
Please join us for an informal discussion of "The
Japanese Lover" in the ATM Chapel.
From New York Times and internationally
bestselling author Isabel Allende, the book is an
exquisitely crafted love story and multigenerational
epic that sweeps from San Francisco in the present-
day to Poland and the United States during the
Second World War.
In 1939, as Poland falls under the shadow of the
Nazis, young Alma Belasco’s parents send her away
to live in safety with an aunt and uncle in their
opulent mansion in San Francisco. There, as the
rest of the world goes to war, she encounters
Ichimei Fukuda, the quiet and gentle son of the
family’s Japanese gardener. Unnoticed by those
around them, a tender love affair begins to blossom.
Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the
two are cruelly pulled apart as Ichimei and his family
are forcibly relocated to internment camps.
Throughout their lifetimes, Alma and Ichimei reunite
again and again, but theirs is a love that they are
forever forced to hide from the world.
Something new this year - please bring a book that
you have recently enjoyed. The group will vote on
the next book to read for the March Book Club, and
you will lead the discussion for "your" book.

Shalom in so many ways is inspiring. Thank you Iris, for helping make Ohev the warm and inviting home away from home
that it is and congratulations on being January’s Congregant of the Month.

term as Third Vice President. As such, I continue to oversee our Inclusion B’Kavod Committee which is now co-chaired
by others who are as passionate about inclusion as I am. In addition, my current role also allows me to have oversight and
be heavily involved in fundraising and programming, and along with wonderful committee chairs, my fellow officers and
directors, and you, our congregants, I am able to take part in discussions and decision making that secure our future as a
community and congregation.
I can honestly say that becoming involved at different levels and in multiple facets of Ohev Shalom has greatly enhanced my
experiences and enriched my home away from home. I know that I speak for Steve as well when I say this, as he has also
become much more involved over the years as an active member, participant, and in a leadership capacity on the Men’s Club Board. I encourage
each and every one of you to become involved as well. Find your passion, join a committee, explore new and exciting ideas, attend events, try
something new. There are more and more amazing and novel happenings at Ohev every month. They only happen because someone introduced
a new idea or event to try! Maybe you attended our Israeli Art Show, or our first ever Inclusion B’Kavod Car Show. Perhaps you were one of
the over 250 attendees at our first Designer Bag Bingo, have registered for our Murder Mystery and 80’s Night Dance Party on January 21st, are
looking forward to our second Monte Carlo Night on March 18th or our annual Comedy Night on April 29th? Did you take part in our Healthy
Living Expo? Every time you participate you not only enhance your personal experiences, you benefit Ohev Shalom through your contributions.
You can also support Ohev when you create a lasting mitzvah by buying a brick for our pathway and through our newest fundraiser, Amazon
Smile. Instead of your usual sign-in to Amazon, go to www.smile.amazon.com and choose Ohev Shalom to receive a percentage of your
purchase. Your purchases benefit Ohev Shalom!
I have been so lucky to make long lasting friends of all ages and backgrounds at Ohev, ones who I may never have otherwise found, except
through my experiences at Ohev Shalom. Steve and I are regular attendees at Friday night services and on many Shabbat mornings. When you
find yourself there as well, please say hello and introduce yourself and share your ideas. We love expanding our friendships and relationships and
growing our Ohev Shalom family!
B’Shalom, Lindsay
