The Epiphany of the Lord January 8, 2017
“They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house
they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated
themselves and did him homage. ” -Matthew 2: 10-11
Dear Parishioners,
Today is the Sunday celebration of the Epiphany of the
Lord! In many countries throughout the world, the Epiphany is
celebrated on the traditional date of January 6th. However, in
those countries, like the United States, where the Epiphany is
not observed as a Holy Day of Obligation, it is transferred to
the nearest Sunday following January 1st. Happy Epiphany!
The Nativity of the Lord (Christmas) and the Epiphany of
the Lord are the two principal celebrations of Christmas Time.
The Birth in Bethlehem and Manifestation of the Savior to the
Kings give present day meaning to how we live our Christian
lives. The Birth of Jesus in time is also his Birth again in our
time and in our lives. The Manifestation of the Savior in time
is also his Manifestation, his Epiphany, in our time and to each
one of us. If we allowed ourselves to truly encounter Christ
this Christmas in his Word, his Sacraments and his grace, then
we have been shown the saving power of God. This is how our
lives are changed. This is how our Christian lives are nour-
ished and deepened. Like the Kings, having met the Lord in a
new way with the celebration of his Birth, then with this Epiph-
any celebration we return to our everyday lives “by another
way.”
Christmas Time comes to its liturgical conclusion this year
with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord which is celebrated
tomorrow, Monday, January 9, 2017. If possible, join us for
the 7:15 AM or 12:05 PM Mass in the Cathedral Chapel as we
bring this holy and festive time to a fitting conclusion.
Did you receive your e-mail Parish Newsletter this past
week? There are many wonderful things that take place at the
Cathedral Parish in addition to our full schedule of liturgical
celebrations. This monthly Parish Newsletter will be sent auto-
matically at the beginning of each month to our registered pa-
rishioners with an e-mail address. This is another way, besides
the Parish Bulletin, to provide our parishioners with news and
updates about the Parish. If you did not receive it, then we do
not have your e-mail address on file. Please send an e-mail to
the Parish at info@cathedralphila.org with your contact infor-
mation and you will receive the next edition of the Parish
Newsletter. Also, please feel free to forward the Parish News-
letter to you family and friends.
Once again, I thank all our parishioners and visitors for
your goodness and generosity to the Cathedral Parish this
Christmas and all the time. The second collection at Mass next
Sunday will be directed to winter maintenance expenses.
God bless you for the Epiphany of the Lord and the New Year,
Father Dennis Gill

casa”. Trata de revivir hoy esta antigua tradición. Se puede
hacer dentro de cualquier grupo familiar. Una persona in-

LIVING STEWARDSHIP NOW
Star Gazers Around a thousand years ago a stonemason in Autun,
France, was working on decorations for the city’s new ca-
thedral. One of his carvings shows a charming scene. The
three kings, all wearing crowns and sharing one cozy bed,
are being awakened by an angel pointing to a star. The an-
gel’s finger is gently touching the hand of one of the kings
on top of the patterned coverlet. This king’s eyes have
popped open in surprise, while the other two slumber on.
The stonemason artistically combined two biblical stories
into one. The star reminds us of the one that led the kings to
Bethlehem, while the visiting angel refers to the warning
they received in a dream not to return to Herod after visiting
the Christ Child. For centuries tradition has held that the
names of the kings were Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar,
but nobody really knows for sure. Other traditions call them
wise men from the East who studied the stars. They were
the first non-Jews to recognize and worship the Son of God
and give him kingly gifts. In the Middle Ages, houses were
blessed on Epiphany, reflecting how the magi found Christ
“on entering the house.” Try reviving this ancient tradition
today. It can work for any family or household group. One
person incenses the house while another sprinkles holy wa-
ter, and a third writes in chalk over every outside doorway
“20 + C + M + B + 11” (or whatever the year may be),
which stands for “The three Holy Kings, Caspar, Melchior,
Balthasar, in the year of Our Lord 2011.” The letters C, M,
and B also stand for Christus mansionem benedicat, “May
Christ bless this home.” Blessing the doorways symbolizes
the family’s commitment to welcome everyone as Christ
into their home throughout the year.
Living Stewardship Now A prayer for Epiphany:
Father, you revealed your Son to the nations by the guid-
ance of a star. Lead us to your glory in heaven by the light
of faith. (The Roman Missal, Opening Prayer for the Epiphany
of the Lord)
