Ethics vs moralwhat’s the difference?

Ethics and moral relate to “right” and “wrong” conduct. While they are sometimes used interchangeably, they are different: Ethics refer to rules provided by an external source, e.g., codes of conduct in workplaces or principles in religions. Moral refer to an individual’s own principles regarding right and wrong.

In common usage we speak and write about a professional code of ethics and a person of high moral character.

Cloud computing services offer greater flexibility in delivering IT services

What’s relevant for the ethics analyses 1

Shifting of control from technology users to the third party servicing the cloud due to the outsourcing and off shoring of ICT functionality to the cloud.

Storage of data in multiple physical locations across many servers around the world possibly owned and administrated by many different organizations.

Interconnection of multiple services across the cloud. At different levels functionality of different providers is connected to provide a specific service to an end-user.

Booking on the cloud or publishing data/files on the cloud has as consequence that you loose part of the control on your data.

Anonymization (Smart Data, Data Mining, Deep Learning)

Companies aim to enhance the service experience of the end user. For that they need to collect data about what, how, when you use the service with which device/frequency/location (Smart Data). They will then treat the information in order to provide new services or enhance your experience (Data Mining and Deep Learning).

Anonymization of the data collected is part of the ethics rules that you have to put in place as service provider related to the privacy. But there is also an individual responsibility to control what you let or not do with your data.

Privacy

Perhaps privacy is the rules that has stimulated much attention from the press with the introduction of “patriot act” after 2001.

On the other hand events like “panama papers” has exposed reprehensible acts that are not acceptable in term of moral but that can comply with local laws & Ethics .

Ethics rules of the provider

Protect your customer privacy and defend him from piracy. Security has not been invented to sell your consulting.

Protect your customer against data corruption and data loss.

Simplify your chain as possible so that the customer experience is enjoyable in using your services.

Be fair with your customer if he decides to choose another provider and facilitate the data transfer.

Be transparent about the rules regarding SLA and support you provide so that the customer chooses you as a trusted partner.

The customer is neither dumb nor an engineer so explain, instruct about incidents with a report and recommendations so that you can enhance the customer experience.

Ethics rules of the customer

Security labels are not made to be nice on the corner of the desk. Choose providers that take seriously they security rules (ISO 27001, ISAE3402).

Don’t complain if you do not read the rules of SLA and windows maintenances, they are reflecting the capacity of a provider to deliver a service.

Be conscious that if you place data/files on the cloud they are following the local laws and ethics rules of your provider DC location/jurisdiction.

Do not place data that infringe local laws or intellectual property. Cloud computing does not mind the lawless land.
