Purpose of Advisory:

Provide a safe, small community for each middle school student.

Ensure that each student has an adult mentor and advocate.

Foster every student’s social, emotional, and intellectual growth.

Create a caring and supportive environment in which students can succeed.

Role of Advisors:

Regularly connect with each student on an individual basis.

Provide academic guidance and support. Provide emotional support. Advocate for every student. Foster a home-school connection. Engage students in activities that foster social,

emotional and intellectual development and growth.

Daily Structure

Sixth Grade advisory will meet every day for 25 minutes.

Sixth Grade advisory will be scheduled immediately after lunch at 11:35 AM.

Each advisory group will meet in the advisor’s classroom.

The sixth grade advisors will meet to discuss and plan advisory every second Wednesday of the month before school.

Goals:

Help students make a smooth transition between elementary and middle school.

Establish a trusting and safe relationship with every student in advisory.

Create a safe and supportive advisory community. Familiarize students with middle school. Help students become involved in the school

community. Help students establish effective school and social

habits.

Week 1: Getting Acquainted

Tuesday: Meet your Mentor Introduction to mentors “Getting to know you” activity with mentors

Wednesday: Team Building Activity – “Traffic Jam” Middle School Expectations

Go over the rules and expectations of middle school Friday: Check-in

Week 2: Getting Involved

Week 2 Activities

Monday: What can you do here? Introduce the extra-curricular options

Tuesday: How are you involved? Discussion with mentors about being involved in the

community. Wednesday: Whiffle Ball

With other sixth grade advisories Thursday: How to manage it all
