CO-CHAIRMANS REPORT FOR DECEMBER 2015 MYRON VOGT

Over the years ( 2016 will be our 18th) we have built up a number of programs that benefit the communities and provide a way for mem-bers to contribute. However, these programs don’t run themselves. It may not seem like it but there is a constant need for new volunteers and new leaders. By “new volunteers” I don’t mean just new mem-bers, but current members who need to think about starting to help out when they can. Don’t always wait to be asked. The main effort in 2106 will be to keep our current programs healthy and look at some new programs that our members may be interested in supporting. Little Libraries These are small structures like a big mail box. About 2 feet by 2 feet and a foot deep that will hold a couple dozen books. They are placed where people congregate for some reason (like a bus stop). People can take a book and keep it or bring it back. One of our mem-bers is already involved in a program like this and we could support that. There is a need to build the “libraries”, find books appropriate for the location and maintain the book supply. I think Bluebills could do all these things. Fall Prevention Bluebill partners have provided a lot of support for this pro-gram and we can offer a lot of no-charge grab bars, railings and safety fixes to those who need them. There are two things to attack: We need to train more members to do this work:We need to hold more information sessions with hospitals and home care agencies who deal with clients who need this service.

Used Hospital Equipment ECHHO in Port Townsend takes in and loans out used hospital equipment like wheelchairs, crutches, walkers, etc. They have a distribution branch in Port Ludlow that a couple of Bluebills helped organize. We would like to expand this program to Quilcene and Brinnon.

Member Recognition People like to help those in their home town. They like to work with their neighbors. To a large extent this is the way our Bluebill Chapter works. Although we hold quarterly member recognition and appreciation luncheons only about one-third of our members attend these. This year we had a Member Recognition lunch in Sequim. We plan similar events in Quilcene and Kitsap County. If any of you have an idea where we may be able to help the community with either a new program or supporting an existing one, let me know. Over the years we have tried a number of programs. A lot didn’t work out but some obviously did.

There were 47 Bluebills reporting 844 hours.

That’s 23% of the membership reporting hours.

This is much lower than usual. Perhaps it is because people are busy for the holidays

and aren’t bothering toreport hours. I’m sure I’ll pick up some more hours when I send the request

in January and remind them that perhaps they forgot to report their November hours.

We had a great turnout and a job well done . The clients are very happy with their new ramp. In
