The Geologic Time Scale – Earth’s Story

GQ #1

Journal Entry #5: A Glimpse of Your Life 11/21/14

Turn a piece of paper sideways (landscape), create a timeline of your life starting with your birth and continuing to now.

Include important events in your life such as the birth of a brother or sister, the death of a loved one, moving to a different state, changing schools, special vacations, special accomplishments/awards etc…

Include a minimum of 10 events on your time line…more would be even better!

Think About it…

How do you know about your past?

How do we know about Earth’s past?

The Geologic Time Scale• Using fossil evidence to make inferences,

scientists have outlined the history of life on Earth on a calendar called the-

GEOLOGIC TIME SCALE

• This time scale dates back as far as 4.6 billion years ago….that is a long time!

The Geologic Time Scale

• Read pages 168-169 in the Red Textbook

• Turn to page 302 – How are the two charts similar? Different?

• Read the top of page 303- Divisions of Time

The Best- Extinct Animals…

• Read the article on The Best: Extinct Animals …please do NOT mark on article (class set)

• What catches your attention from the article? Why? Noticings? Wonderings?

…Write down 3 on your paper!

Carcharodon megalodon

Arthropleura armata

Meganeura monyi

Aepyornis maximus

Elasmotherium sibiricum

Gigantopithecus blacki

Jackelopterus rhenaniae

Shonisaurus sikanniensis

Doedicurus clavicaudatus

Ceratogaulus rhinosceros

Brain POP: Geologic Time

Reading and Gathering Important Information about Earth’s History

• Silently read pages 172-177 in the Red Textbook.

• As you read, think about key characteristics that marked each of the Eras – kinds of plants and animals, the climate, atmosphere etc…What would that Era look like if you had to draw a picture of it?

• Complete the graphic organizer…for each Era you must write 4-6 important facts about it.

*THESE ARE YOUR NOTES…THINK!

Creating a Panorama of Geologic TimeWorking cooperatively with your table group, you are to create a panorama showing Earth’s History.• Each group member needs to take an Time/Era.• On the white paper provided include the following- ~ Name of Era, when it started and ended ~ Visual Evidence of key organisms that lived during this Era, what the climate/environment was like, key landforms etc… ~ Work should be neat, organized, colored. ~ Tape your finished product together to create a time scale of Earth’s History. *Be sure it’s the correct order-starting with the oldest!• Write your name on the bottom of the Era YOU completed – each

student will be graded individually on their work!

ACC Science: A Look at Geologic Time

TASK:Your table group will be assigned a Period/Era from the geologic time scale to teach the class.

Requirements:• Poster visually reflects the Period/Era• Poster has 6 key facts about the Periods/Era• Creative, quality work! “Think outside the Box!”• All group members help make poster• All group members present information to class
