Chances are you’ve seen BROTHER on NBC’s ‘ER’, maybe heard their music on the classic ‘Baraka’ soundtrack or UPN’s ‘ Twilight Zone.’ The band has shared stages with Joe Walsh, John Entwhistle, Linkin Park, and Alicia Keys and are the only independent band to have played the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Fusing signature vocals and guitar with the deep pulse of the didgeridoo, the soaring highs of the bagpipes, and tribal percussion, BROTHER is wholly original.

The band’s powerhouse live performances are an energetic celebration, captivating and engaging the audience from the first song to the last.

MuRdER THE STOuT has been compared to a Scottish version of The Pogues, with folk, rock, punk & ska influences all apparent in their music. MTS released a 7 track EP in Dec 2011 to much critical acclaim prompting multiple label interest and work is now on for a 2nd full length studio album, to be produced by Street Dogs’ Johnny Rioux, whose recent work includes Flatfoot 56 and Roger Miret & the Disasters. As President of the Caledonian Society of Arizona, I offer a warm, Scottish welcome to our 2014 Highland Games. Hundreds of years ago,

Scottish royalty and clan chiefs held competitions to find the fastest runners, the strongest warriors and the most skilled with weaponry. Our Arizona Highland Games are the modern version of those times where you’ll bear witness to the best athletes and also preserve the rich tradition by your very presence.Fifty years ago in Phoenix, seven different Celtic societies came together to form one called the Caledonian Society of Arizona. (Caledonia is the old Latin name given by the Romans for present day Scotland). For 50 years the Society has run the Arizona Scottish Gathering & Highland Games starting in a Phoenix parking lot to what is now the biggest Celtic event in the state.So prestigious has this event grown to that the Governor of Arizona (Janice K. Brewer) has issued a Proclamation that March 2014 is officially “ARIZONA CELTIC MONTH”. The proclamation encourages people of diverse cultural backgrounds to participate in Celtic events. All cultures should have equal respect, but Scottish culture happens to be loud and colorful (think bagpipes, drums, kilts…) The Caledonian Society of Arizona is growing and is reaching out to support all the other Celtic societies in any we can. We particularly have great affinity with our Irish cousins who run the Irish Cultural Center and McClelland library in downtown Phoenix. We are celebrating revitalization with our new logo and many new services offered to members and the public such as Genealogy Advice and promotion of live concerts of local Celtic bands and singers. The Games are made possible only by the hard work of members & volunteers who have an unquestionable passion and love for Scottish culture. I commend all who have given their time and energy to make this rich event happen. With much pride and excitement…LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

CLANS“Tartan” is cloth: most kilts are made of tartan. The tartan is one of the two great symbols of Scotland, along with the bagpipes. Each clan has a tartan, sometimes more than one member can be identified by the tartan they wear. In addition to clan and family tartans there are also tartans for districts and special organizations. At the Games you will see the official tartan of the United States Marine Corps along with the Arizona State tartan. The “Arizona State Tartan” was officially recognized in December, 1995 by a proclamation by the Governor. Colors in the Arizona tartan are green, tan, white, red, black, yellow, and azure, all significant to the state’s history. While you are attending the Scottish Gathering and Highland Games this year, make it a point to visit the Clan tents. You will have no problem finding them. Look for brightly colored flags, tartans and banners flying. You’ll be as welcome as you can be and you will find many gracious and interested folks who will be more than happy to help you with any questions you might have.

Glenmorangie Scottish Highland Games is comprised of many things: world-class athletic competitions, Highland dance, reenactment presentations, educational seminars, clans, food, live music, bag-pipe &

drum bands from all over the globe and lots of fun for the wee lads & lasses. Have you ever seen a big burley man in a kilt toss a telephone-pole-like caber? The tradition of the athletic competition goes back to the days when rival clans or kings would meet. Did you know that the origination of pipe bands comprised of pipers, side drummers, bass drummers and occasionally a tenor drummer occurred sometime after the battle of Waterloo in 1815? Or how about, that right along with the ancient stories of daring warriors and master pipers you will find dance as a crucial part of celebrations and ceremonies of the Highlands? Nothing can compare with the graceful power of a Highland dancer recalling a glorious victory. The Wee Lads & Lasses area this year features traditional games and competitions, inflatable obstacle course and skill challenges.This year’s entertainment committee proudly presents one big pub stage (literally, it’s set up like a pub) featuring two popular bands: Murder the Stout and Brother as well World Famous DJ Rani “g” in the Glenmo Lounge along with local bands Stoneybrook, Time Reclaimed, and a variety of roving musicians. Another “big” part of the entertainment lineup this year is Christopher Yates! Our favorite red-headed stilt-walking, juggling, magical Scotsman extraordinaire is back again! He’ll be roaming about ~ just look for the “crowd” and he’ll be right in the center!Visit with our friends from the British Car Clubs, reenactment groups and Scottish Country dancers who will demonstrate and perform throughout the weekend! Come hungry! In the mood for some haggis? Fish & chips? Shepherd’s Pie? Find all of that (and more) in the food court! New this year, our friends from Four Peaks Brewery will be hosting the Four Peaks Brewery Tasting Room, complete with craft beer tastings & educational seminars throughout the weekend. There will be 40 vendors selling an array of Scottish merchandise!And you can’t have a Scottish Games without … well…Scotch! And not just any Scotch ~ but our favorite Glenmorangie Single Malt Scotch has once again partnered with us.
