The Psychology ofThe Grim Adventures of
Billy and Mandy
Billy
Billy had been diagnosed with Mental Retardation
Mental Retardation is classified as an Axis II disorder
His IQ is -5Billy finds it hard to
keep a friend, more than often he only keeps Irwin and Grim as friends.
Billy’s Treatment
Typically, in Billy’s case of severe retardation, there is no treatment to insure that he will retain the knowledge of a normal person.
I would suggest special education and intensive learning
Mandy
Mandy has Borderline Personality Disorder
BPD is considered an Axis IV disorder
Approximately 2-3% of the population develop this disorder
Mandy shows the constant signs of BPD: mood swings, mild separation anxiety, severe and unmanageable anger.
Borderline Personality Disorder, along with other personality disorders are hard to treat and usually require antipsychotic drugs and intense therapy
In Mandy’s scenario, the only viable solution would be to use a psycho-therapy called “Dialectal Behavior Therapy” and prescribe her with anantipsychotic such as “Prozac” as well as an anti-anxiety such as “Xanax,” in most cases a psychiatrist would also suggest an anti-depressant, but I feel like Mandy doesn’t need one.
Mandy’s Treatment
Nergal Jr.
Nergal Jr. seems to have Depressive Personality Disorder
DPD is classified as an Axis I disorder
Nergal shows the classic symptoms of an “ill-humored” subtype Constant downing on
himself, he feels like everyone hates him, no one will ever be his friend
Nergal Jr.’s Treament
Depressive Personality Disorder, unlike other personality disorders, can easily be treated with a low to high dosage antidepressant
In Nergal Jr’s situation, I would suggest that he take a medium dosage antidepressant and if his depression fades away or continues we would take action to lower the dosage of the antidepressant and add an antipsychotic to the list
Jeff the Spider
Jeff the Spider has Separation Anxiety
Separation Anxiety is classified as a Axis I diagnoses
Jeff is seen in the show as being very “close” with Billy, his father
Billy tells Jeff to go away and Jeff screams “LOVE ME DADDY! WHY WONT YOU LOVE ME!”
Jeff the Spider’s Treatment
Jeff the Spider could easily be diagnosed with severe anxiety
I suggest that Jeff and Billy would have family counseling therapy along with a SSRI medication such as Xanax or a similar anti-anxiety drug
