THE HIDDEN SELF
Contains all that you know of yourself that you keep secret
Ex : dream, secret THE UNKNOWN SELF
Represent truths about yourself that neither you nor others know
“the value you place on yourself”
The affective component of self, a person’s positive and negative self-evaluation.
( In contrast to self-concept, which reflect our beliefs and cognitions regarding the self, self
esteem is more emotionally oriented )
•How much do you like yourself ? How valuable a person do you think ? The answer to these questions reflect your self-esteem
•Self-esteem is important : when you feel good about yourself, you will perform better; when you think you’ re a failure, you act like failure.
•Increasing self-esteem, help you to function more effectively
LowSelf-esteem
LowPerformance expectation
High anxiety
Reduced effort
Actual failure
The Cycle of Low Self-esteem. People with low self-esteem who expect to do poorly on a test will
probably experience high anxiety and not work as hard. As a result, they actually fail, which in turn
conforms their negative view of themselves
Despite its intuitive value, self-esteem is not without its critics. Some researchers argue that high self-esteem is not necessarily desirable : it does nothing to improve academic performance, does not predict
success, and may lead to antisocial (aggressive) behavior. Surprisingly large number of criminals and delinquents are found to have extremely high self-esteem. And conversely many people who
have extremely low self-esteem have become successful.
