Creativity of College Students in Problem Solving with and without Technology
Abstract:
Creativity in the mathematics classroom is suggested as a tool that encourages
students' self-expression and freedom in problem solving and posing. At the same
time, technology is suggested as a tool that increases students' role in problem solving
and posing. It is the goal of this research to examine college students' creativity in
problem solving in four college classes. The research will be held in two colleges,
where one class in each college will work with technology and one without it. To do
this, qualitative as well as quantitative analyses will be used.
Introduction:
Creativity in the mathematics classroom is one aspect of mathematics learning that
mathematics education researchers have been paying attention to in the recent two
decades. Doing so, they attempted to define the characteristics of and the meanings
associated with mathematical creativity, but no accepted definition of creativity has
been achieved (Mann, 2006), where some of the existing definitions of creativity are
vague or elusive (Sriraman, 2005), which indicates the complexity of the creativity
construct. Creativity definitions given by the various researchers could be categorized
into two types: those that are concerned with the final product and those that are
concerned with the process (James, Lederman-Gerard, & Vagt-Traore , 2010).
Defining creativity as a final product, Sternberg and Lubart (1999) describe it as the
ability to create an unexpected work, while Chamberlin and Moon (2005) describe
mathematical creativity as the exceptional ability to create useful and original
solutions to problems. Sriraman (2009), on the contrary, says that there is no need for
usefulness to be taken into consideration in mathematical creativity, and it is enough
to define mathematical creativity as the ability to create original work. Defining
10
creativity as process, researchers describe it as the ability to think conceptually. One
of the definitions of creativity as a process included describing its three components:
fluency, flexibility and originality (see for example Leikin, Koichu & Berman, 2009).
Fluency is associated with the number of correct answers that a student gives of a
problem or correct questions posed on a problem, flexibility is associated with the
number of answers' or questions' types on a problem, or with the number of
implemented problem solving or posing strategies; and originality is associated with
the number of solutions or posed problems generated by very few or no other persons
(ibid).
Studies on mathematics creativity report its positive influence on students learning,
for example it encourages open-mindedness and reflective thinking (Lai, 2011), and
thus it provides the talented students with the opportunity to fully develop their talents
(Mann, 2006). Furthermore, it enables students to appreciate the beauty of
mathematics. This positive influence makes it a desired strategy in the hands of the
mathematics teacher. On the other hand, the success of mathematics teachers to use
this strategy in the mathematics classroom depends on their ability to plan a learning
environment in which students' creativity flourish. The first condition for
mathematics teachers to do so is their readiness to recognize, nurture and encourage
the creative potential of their students (Beghetto & Kaufman, 2009). This readiness
could be difficult to achieve because teachers tend to teach the same way they were
taught in school (Pehkonen, 1997), so nurturing creativity is not a strategy that they
adopt as part of their teaching (Sriraman, 2005). This situation encourages introducing
creativity and creative teaching and learning to pre-service teachers, so they discover
the potentialities of this strategy in the mathematics classroom, and use it, as future
teachers, to support the learning of their students. The introduction of creativity to the
11
pre-service teachers in the frame of the present research will be done through problem
solving, which is a corner stone of mathematics learning and teaching (NCTM, 2000).
The pre-service teachers will carry out the rectangle halving task, where part of them
will carry it out without technology and part with technology. It is interested to
examine the pre-service teachers' creativity in the presence of technology and without
it.
Mathematical problem solving with technology:
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) (2008) says that
mathematics students at different levels, in a well-articulated mathematics program
and with the guidance from effective mathematics teachers, can use technological
tools to gain access to problem-solving contexts, to explore problems and to identify
them. This agrees with researchers' claim that technology assists mathematical
problem solving; for example, Limjap (2002) describes technology as an efficient
partner of learners in mathematical problem solving, where it lessens the cognitive
load of working with a mathematical problem by helping the learner acquire a
problem schema. Furthermore, researchers reported how technology assists pre-
service teachers (Daher, 2009) and in-service teachers (Kuzle, 2012) in their problem
solving. Specifically, Daher reported that the participating pre-service teachers
considered applets as tools that help them understand the problem, re-construct it with
technology, and thus have ideas how to solve it. In addition, the two participating in-
service teachers in the study of Kuzle (2012) stressed that Geometer’s Sketchpad
assists them in exploring easily mathematical problems through supporting them in
assessing their mathematical actions and refining them if needed, and thus solve the
problems. These potentialities of the technological tools make them escalators for
mathematical creativity.
12
Mathematical creativity with technology
Clements (1995) argues that educational research indicates no single effect of
technology on creativity, because it can support either uncreative drill or creative
production. He adds that the curriculum in which technology is embedded and the
teacher who integrates it in the mathematics classroom are essential elements in
realizing its full potential. Yerushalmy (2009), talking about the impact of
technological mathematics curriculum on students' creativity, argues that technology
(in the form of electronic textbooks/ interactive web texts) helps students perform the
creative mathematical processes (conjecture, go beyond the known, take a personal
view and become involved in exploring, ask questions, argue, explain, and refute),
and thus supports those students do mathematics creatively. Furthermore, Idris and
Nor (2010), depending on Clements (1995), stress the importance of the teacher, and
say that technological tools, under the guidance of a skillful teacher, create a rich
mathematical learning environment that helps expose students for diversified
experiences, which nurtures their general mathematical creativity. Sophocleous and
Pitta-Pantazi (2011) emphasize the positive impact of technology on students'
mathematical activity, reporting that though sixth grade students' creative abilities in
three-dimensional (3D) geometry were very low in two studies that they conducted,
an interactive 3D geometry software environment enhanced the creativity abilities of
two students by offering them opportunities to imagine, synthesize and elaborate,
which enhanced the students‘ ability to imagine, synthesize and elaborate; i.e. to be
creative.
Research goals and rationale:
13
Studies related to problem solving with technology point at the positive influence of
technology on the different aspects of students' mathematical problem solving. This
positive influence made mathematics education researchers suggest to integrate
technology in problem solving in the mathematics classroom (Barrera-Mora & Reyes-
Rodríguez, 2013). One such positive influence could be the influence on students'
problem solving creativity. Thus it is needed to integrate technology in pre-service
teachers' problem solving, and at the same time to examine the impact of such
integration on students' creative problem solving. The present research intends to do
this, meeting the call of researchers in mathematics creativity to conduct research on
creativity in mathematics education (see Siswono, 2004, 2010). Furthermore, it is
interested to study the difference between students' creativity in the technological
versus traditional environments. This made me decide to introduce creativity thinking
to the pre-service teachers in traditional as well as in technological environment. I
intend to do that, by introducing the two aspects of learning in one task (problem
solving and creativity); i.e. I will request part of the participating students to solve the
halving rectangle task with technology and part without it. Doing that, the task will
ask the students to find as many solutions of the problem as possible.
The research questions:
1. How is pre-service teachers' creativity expressed in a technology based
environment, when they come to divide a rectangle into two equal parts?
2. How is pre-service teachers' creativity expressed in a traditional environment,
when they come to divide a rectangle into two equal parts?
3. Is there a significant difference between students' creativity in a traditional
environment and in a technological environment when they come to divide a
rectangle into two equal parts?
14
Methodology:
The research method and design:
The present research combines the qualitative and the quantitative methods, where the
two methods complement each other. I will use the qualitative method to describe
examples of the pre-service teachers' solutions in the presence of technology and
without it, and describe, at the same time, the differences between the solutions within
each group (the group with technology and the group without it) and between the
groups. The quantitative method is used to compute the mean and range scores of the
fluency, the flexibility and the originality of the students in each group, and, at the
same time, to examine if the differences between the means in the two research
groups are significant.
Research context and participants:
The research will be held in two teachers' colleges, where four classes of mathematics
pre-service teachers will participate in the research. One class from each college
(from 20-30 pre-service teachers) will be asked to solve the rectangle halving problem
without technology and one class from each college will be asked to solve it with
technology. The four classes will be second year classes of pre-service teachers who
study mathematics and computers. The research will continue a couple of years,
where in the first year, one class from each college will work without technology to
solve the rectangle halving problem, while in the second year, one class from each
college will work with technology to solve the problem.
15
The task:
The task statement without technology: We want to divide a rectangle into two equal
parts in as many ways as possible. How can we do that? We want to draw all the
possible ways. We want to reflect how we solved the problem and how we found
different ways of solution.
The task statement with technology: We want to divide a rectangle into two equal
parts in as many ways as possible. How can we do that? We want to draw all the
possible ways. We want to reflect how we solved the problem and how we found
different ways of solution. In addition, we want to reflect about the role of technology
in our solution of the problem.
Data collecting tools:
The students in the four classes will be asked to solve the rectangle halving problem,
and the data will be collected from their answers on it.
Data analyzing tools for the qualitative data:
To analyze the qualitative data, we will use the first two stages of the constant
comparison method (Glaser & Strauss, 1967). These stages are:
• Categorizing data: putting together data expressions or sentences that imply a
category of creativity, for example, putting together all solutions that imply fluency.
16
• Comparing data: comparing expressions or sentences within each previously built
category. This gave rise to sub-categories. This is right especially when coding a
student's flexibility or originality. For example, in coding the flexibility of a student,
we can arrive at flexibility related to sub-categories related to types of solutions
(Algebraic, graphical, etc.)
Data analyzing tools for the quantitative data:
Students' creativity analysis depends on the model developed by Leikin (Leikin, 2009;
Leiken & Kloss, 2011). The model contains operational definitions and a scoring
method to evaluate creativity based on three dimensions (fluency, flexibility, and
originality). This model utilizes the notion of solution spaces (Leikin, 2007): Expert
solution spaces, individual solution spaces and collective solution spaces. Expert
solution spaces include the most complete set of solutions known at a particular time
to a problem, whereas individual solution spaces are collections of solutions that an
individual produces to a particular problem. In addition, collective solution spaces are
a combination of the solutions produced by a group of individuals. Depending on this
notion of solution spaces, we compute the creativity score of an individual.
Fluency (Fl) is the number of solutions in the individual solution space. To evaluate
flexibility (Flx), it is needed to establish groups of solutions for the task. Two
solutions belong to different groups if they use solution strategies based on different
representations, properties (theorems, definitions, or auxiliary constructions), or fields
of mathematics (Algebra, geometry, etc.) Establishing the solution space, flexibility is
17
evaluated as follows (see Figures 1): Flx1 =10 for the first appropriate solution. For
each consecutive solution, Flxi =10 if it belongs to a group of solutions different from
the solution(s) performed previously; Flxi =1 if the solution belongs to one of the
previously used groups but has a clear minor distinction; Flxi = 0.1 if the solution is
almost identical with a previous solution. A student’s total flexibility score on a
problem is the sum of the student’s flexibility on all the solutions in the student’s
solution space. We evaluate originality (Or) of a written problem solution of an
individual in the following way: If P is the percentage of students in the group that
produces a particular solution, then (relative evaluation): Ori =10 , when P <15% or
for an unconventional solution; Ori =1, when 15% ≤ P < 40% or for partly-
unconventional solution; Ori = 0.1 , when P ≥ 40% . A student’s total originality score
on a problem is the sum of the student’s originality on the solutions in the student’s
individual solution space.
The creativity (Cr ) of a particular solution is the product of the solution’s originality
and flexibility: Cri = Flxi × Ori. The total creativity score on a task is the sum of the
creativity scores on each solution in the individual solution space of a problem:

Validity and reliability of the research qualitative tools and procedure:
The validity of the research analyzing procedure is guaranteed by our analysis method
which ensures the theoretical saturation. This theoretical saturation is due to the
existence of solution spaces, which ensures that no new solution type (category) will
appear. The solution space also ensures that every solution type will be well
developed in terms of its properties and dimensions demonstrating variation (Strauss
& Corbin, 1998, p. 212).
Lincoln and Guba (1985) say that no validity exists without reliability, so the ensuring
of validity also ensures reliability. This means that following theoretical saturation
maintains not only the validity of the research procedure but also its reliability.
Further, two experienced coders (one of them the author) will code the participants’
solutions, searching for the participants’ solution types. The agreement between the
coders (Cohen’s Kappa coefficient) (when satisfied) ensures the reliability of the
qualitative coding.
19
To analyze the quantitative data, we will use the SPSS package to compute the means
and ranges of students' fluency, flexibility and originality. We will also use the t-test
to find out if the difference of the means in the two research groups is significant.
Statistical tests:
To answer the third research question, statistical tests will be used to compute the
mean value of fluency, flexibility and originality, as well as the range of these values.
In addition, t-test will be used to find if the difference between students' creativity in a
traditional environment and a technological one is significant.
Guaranteeing the participants' rights:
The pre-service teachers who will participate in the study will do so on a voluntary
basis. Moreover, the participants will be informed that their solution of the creativity
problem is in the frame of an educational research. Personal data will not be
exposed to anyone except the researchers. Likewise, the identity of any of the
participants will not to be requested, and the findings will not imply a
personal reference. Furthermore, the study will be done with the consent of the two
colleges.
