THE LEYEND OF THE MYSTERIOUS IRON TREE FROM
EL HIERRO ISLAND;GAROE
There was a holy tree that the Bimbaches (ancient
people from El Hierro,Canary Islands) called Garoe (‘River,
Lagoon'). They were proud of Garoe. When the conquerors were
coming, the bimbaches decided to keep The holy
Tree in secret to avoid new foreigners: the Castilian or
Spanish soldiers finding out it.
They thought The conqueros couln't live without water
and would die in a few days
Garoé was a large laurel tree that assured Bimbaches’ lives, providing them water enough
to surviveLater,the Bimbaches filled
water chaffs and water was transported to villages to all
parts of the island.
The secret was only kept for some time, however, a local young girl,
Agarfa, fell in love with an European soldier and showed him the place
where Garoe was. Conquerors discovered the tree after the soldier
had told them the hidden place.
When the Bimbaches discovered Agarfa's betrayal, they killed her near
Garoe, which was also named, the Holy Iron Tree. She was killed
because she had reveled its secret.
It was also said that Garoe roots were used for curing illnesses.
Due to its location, where tradewinds occured, the water from the clouds were condensed from the branches of the tree and later, it poured rain around the island.
The original tree fell in a storm in 1610, but . another tree was planted in the same place, where Garoe was in 1957. It has been growing and is surrounded by mosses.
