THE MINIMAL EYE

RASNA BHASIN

THE MINIMAL EYE The Minimal Eye, is a coffee table book, made by Rasna Bhasin. More on the lines of a photo-book, Bhasin tries to capture the lives and design philosophies of two proficient, famous & minimalistic designers of her times.Wendell Rodricks & Issey Miyake, two very similar yet different fashion de-signers. Both the designers are known around the world for their minimalistic ap-proach towards design. Over the decades the designers, have time and again proved that fashion does not need to be over the top. The first half of ‘The Minimal Eye’ takes you through Rodricks life, while the second is dedicated to that of Mi-yake.They say a picture speaks a thousand words, The Minimal Eye hopes that these pictures speak to you about these two creative geniuses....

WENDELL RODRICKS

Wendell Rodricks, is not just your average fashion designer; he is the Jack of all trades and the master of many. The multi-talented designer’s work not only includes designing clothes but also writing, theatre design, advertising styling and forecast portfolios! From a career in hospitality to becoming an Indian Fashion Icon, Wendell has come a long way. Trained in Los Angeles and Paris, he returned to India in 1988. After a brief span of two years, designing for reputed companies such as Garden Vareli, Lakme and DeBeers, he established his own label in 1990.He moved to his ancestral village in Goa in 1993, creat-ing memorable collections each season, inspired by many emo-tions: Tibetan Monasteries, Tribal symbols of Shiva and Vishnu, the Harem at Istanbul, Tattoos of the Lambadi tribe among others. Rodricks has put the tiny Indian state of Goa firmly on the fashion map The designer with the minimalistic approach, taught The In-dian Fashion Industry, simple could be beautiful and minimal could be effective. The maverick that he is, he’s managed to not only stay true to his design sensibilities, but also inspire a whole new gen-eration of Indian fashion designers. If young designers, today talk about minimalism, one can eas-ily point out that Wendell did it almost two decades ago.

Wendell Rodricks, the man behind the eponymous label, dubbed by his peers the Guru of Indian Minimalism. In his own words, “My wonderful humble village does not realize that it will forever be associated in fashion history as the place where Indian Minimalism was born. I did not realize it at the time, but I did indeed give India minimalism, and here is where it germinated.”
