Dear Parents, Guardians and Community Members, As the fourth quarter of a busy and productive school year begins, we have much information to share. Primarily on our minds is upcoming stand-ardized testing including LEAP and ILEAP which will be conducted April 8th-11th with make ups on April 12th. Please note that make ups are allowed
only under extreme circumstances of physician-documented illness. If an eighth grade student misses testing for unexcused reasons, the testing will need to be made up this summer and the student will not pass for the year until those summer results are returned. As you know, LEAP for eighth graders is high stakes, which means the student must meet certain state criteria in order to advance to the ninth grade. Results of seventh grade ILEAP testing are used to determine if a student is in need of an extra tutorial program offered as a pull out during the PE hour. These results are also used to determine place-ment in honors-level classes. Therefore, it is important for all students to take this seri-ously. Please assure that your child gets a good night sleep and eats a good breakfast each day.
Also, don’t forget about “Monteleone Magic” on April 25 from 6-8:30 p.m. here on campus. This wonderful family event will be an outstanding junior high memory for your child and hopefully for you as well. There are so many opportunities to share the experiences that our students will be showcasing on this evening. You will not want to miss this event! There are many opportunities for parents and relatives to volunteer to be a part of this event that is so important to our students. As usual, please carefully peruse this issue of our PTA newsletter. We hope the accompanying “Magic” schedule will be helpful in guiding your evening and perhaps carv-ing out some time to volunteer. We need you! This event takes our village here at Mon-teleone to make it a wonderful and memorable experience for our students. As this school year nears an end, I’d like to express our sincerest pleasure in having worked with your students. It has been a great year of the most respectful, posi-tive, hard working and enjoyable group of young teens. Thanks for all that you have done for our school!
Sincerely, Donna Addison Principal

PTSA Newsletter
Parents, We are looking to fill our PTSA Executive Board and Chair Positions for the 2013-2014 school year at LMJ. Attached, you will find a brief description of the open positions. Please consider being a part of such an important organ-ization at Monteleone. LMJ depends on our PTSA to accomplish so many tasks that support our teachers, faculty, and students. I assure you, as first time president at a new school, I could not have been any less nervous than you may be to take that leap of faith! As a result, it has been a very self-fulfilling experience to lead the PTSA this year. The support of all the PTSA members has guided me along the way. I am looking forward to being a part of the PTSA at Lakeshore High next year! Please look over the list of open positions and if you have any questions, please feel free to email me so we can discuss any concerns you may have. I promise you that whatever you can do to be a part of LMJ’s PTSA, you will not be disappointed! It is the perfect opportunity to stay on top of what’s going on at a place where your child spends so much of their time. Sharing a position with a friend is a great way to become involved and share the responsibilities, so ask your friends to con-sider a position with you! Sincerely, Dawn Robinson PTSA President (deltadawn00@yahoo.com)

Monteleone Junior High PTSA Open Positions for 2013-2014
Executive Board: President 1st Vice President (Volunteer Coordinator) – gathers info from the forms that parents complete at the beginning of the school year to organize what categories parents are willing to volunteer for and distributes this info to that particular chair person. Secretary – records minutes from each PTSA meeting (once a month) Chairs: Bank Day – One day a month, collects deposits for savings accounts for students at Whitney Bank. Cultural Arts – Accepts applications for our Reflections Contest; collects applications for Safety Poster Contest; this person submits the entries to the District (online) and helps organize the winners from LMJ to attend the Children’s Banquet. These events happen one time during the school year. Dance – Helps make a back drop for each dance (usually three for the whole school year), organizes pictures to be taken, and sells tickets at school. Teacher Appreciation – Organizes teacher appreciation lunches/breakfasts/snacks for each nine weeks. Mini Grants – accepts applications from faculty for these grants, votes on who receives the grants (with the principal’s assistance) and issues the grants once the winners are chosen. This happens once during the school year. Newsletter – puts together the PTSA/LMJ school newsletter to be put on the school website. The newsletter usually goes out once a quarter and info is gathered from teachers and parents to include in the newsletter, so you aren’t actually writing info for the news-letter, just gathering info and putting into a newsletter format. Restaurant Nights – sets up restaurant nights that happen certain days of each month (the same days of each month) and sends reminders to the office, PTSA, and the facebook page to let everyone know what restaurant night is featured. work schedules so this is the perfect way for kids and their dads to have breakfast together once a month and spend some quality time together. All Pro-Dad’s – puts together meetings once a month in the cafeteria before school; this organization is about dads and their chil-dren. It is such an important part of our PTSA! Kids don’t seem to spend enough time with their dads because of work schedules
so this is the perfect way for kids and their dads to have breakfast together once a month and spend some quality time together.

Making the Decision to Learn
Positive Attitudes = Academic Improvement
The importance of a good attitude toward school cannot be too strongly emphasized. Students who have a positive attitude can in some cases achieve more than those with a negative attitude. Attitudes toward learning are established at an early age. Attitudes come from obvious sources, like older peers influencing younger students, and from less obvious sources, such as casual statements that are taken more seriously than intended. As parents, it’s important to use a sup-
portive tone when speaking about school and the value of a good education.
Encourage your child to show respect for teachers and school staff.
Remind them they are responsible for their words and actions.
Encourage them to follow rules and use manners. Get involved in their education by asking about their day and what they are learning.
Be supportive when they feel overwhelmed.
Listen to their concerns but keep complaints to a minimum.
Use encouraging words when checking your student’s grades such as, “You are doing great in Read ing.” “What do you need to do to improve your Math grade?”
Be a positive role model by working through problems peacefully. Remind your child to make the decision to learn each day.
Every child deserves the best school has to offer. Having positive role models that promote edu-cation can help children with school success. Keep smiling! Leslie Doiron M.Ed

Congratulations LMJH Singers!
“MAGIC” at Monteleone is a very special time, and it is an evening in late April- APRIL 25, THURS-DAY. All Spanish students will be required to do a short research paper on their ancestral country of origin.(This may involve the ethnicity of a parent or grandparent). In addition, students will prepare a “sweet” (dessert or “goodie”) to bring to our interna-tional treat fest at Magic. During the Easter break, students need to ask family members to share a special “cultural” recipe from their heritage. They can bring a copy of that recipe to school, so that we can plan for our festival. All desserts will be made at home and they can be brought to school, if no refrigeration required, on the morning of MAGIC. Parent volunteers (for half-hour shifts) would be greatly appreciated, to help “sell” our treats. Students who would like to wear a colorful t-shirt, and one of my sombreros, in the parade, are asked to be at the school on the nite of Magic- no
later than 5:45 P.M. Come early for a good parking place. Muchas gracias for all of your support throughout
the year.!!!!!!!!!!! Saludos de Senora

Thank you to all of the parents, students, and faculty who supported the book fair and/or volun-
teered. Biancha R.’s name was pulled from the students who made purchases at the book fair and
won a $50.00 gift certificate.
The Box Tops program has been a huge success this year! The students are continuing to bring in
forms; please continue to help and encourage your students to bring 50 Box Tops in for a FREE
DRESS DAY! While it is helpful if the Box Tops are on the form; we will accept them in an enve-
lope with the student's name on it.
The library will also take Community Coffee labels and Campbell's Soup Labels for Education.
These are used to benefit our school in various ways.
Send your used ink cartridges, cell phones, and electronic devices to the library! So far this year,
we have earned $50.00 recycling ink cartridges. We will take big or small cartridges!
