The Nervous System
Nervous System
• What is it?
–The system that receives,
processes, stores and
transmits information that
comes from various parts of the
body and the external world.
Nervous System
It is composed of 2 parts:
The Central Nervous
System (CNS)
The Peripheral Nervous
System (PNS)
Central Nervous
System• The central nervous
system is the part of
the nervous system
that is made up of
the
–the brain
–spinal cord
The BrainThe parts of the central
nervous system located in
the cranium
Parts of the Brain
• 3 main
parts:
• Cerebrum
• Cerebellum
• Brain stem
Cerebrum
• Command centre
for all voluntary
movement,
interpretation of
senses, emotions
and intelligence
Parts of the Brain
Cerebrum
In other words it is
responsible for:
Thinking
Moving
Emotions
Sensing
Parts of the Brain
The cerebrum is
divided into the
right and left
hemisphere
The left hemisphere
controls the right side
of the body and vice
versa
Parts of the Brain
Cerebrum
The cerebrum is made up of two
types of matter:
Parts of the Brain
Grey matter: outer layer
- Also called the cerebral
cortex
- Directs higher brain
functions like planning,
reasoning and logic
Cerebrum
Grey matter makes up about 40% of
the brain and uses up about 94% of
available oxygen

Parts of the Brain
•White matter:
• inner layer
• Acts as a relay between the different
brain regions
•In other words, it coordinates
communication
Cerebrum
•White matter
makes up about
60% of the brain
Parts of the Brain
Cerebellum
• Part of the brain that
coordinates balance
and posture (by
contracting
appropriate
muscles)
Parts of the Brain
Brain stem (Medulla
oblongata)
• Regulates:
– breathing
– heart rate
– communication to
cerebrum

the Cerebrum
Frontal lobe:
reasoning,
planning,
speech,
muscle control,
personality,

the Cerebrum
Parietal Lobe:
sensing,
interpreting
language
