Message from the President Greetings from the Epsilon Mu Sigma Alumnae

Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. in

Tuscaloosa, Alabama. We are honored and thankful that

you have chosen to follow our chapter in another edition

of our lovely newsletter: Sigma Insights.

In the past months, we have been serving our

community in many ways. First, we had a Meet & Greet

that not only included members of Sigma Gamma Rho in

the Tuscaloosa area but also ladies who may be

interested in our organization. We also had a wonderful

time and turnout for our first annual Youth Symposium,

which was held in Livingston, Alabama at Sumter Central

High.

We encourage you to read the newsletter for any

upcoming events, and you can also follow us on

Facebook as well as our new website.

We look forward to including you in some of our

upcoming events and would like to thank you again for

following the ladies of Epsilon Mu Sigma as we continue

to grow and heed to our Motto of Greater Service,

Greater Progress.

The ladies of the Epsilon Mu Sigma

Alumnae Chapter hosted their first

Meet & Greet on February 4th at

the Tuscaloosa Public Library. The

event was a great success, and fun

was had by all!

On March 10, 2012 Epsilon Mu Sigma

hosted a youth symposium in collaboration with

the University of Alabama Chapter of NOBCChE

(the National Organization for the Professional

Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical

Engineers) entitled Imagine Science and

Engineering.

This event took place at Sumter Central

High School and began with an informative

panel discussion with graduate students

from the University of Alabama who

work in various fields of Chemistry

and Engineering. The students

were informed of how the panel

guest ended up choosing their

fields of interest, along with their

field of study and the process that

led to their decision. Then the

students were put into groups to learn

about a specific field of science or engineering.

Afterwards, students created a skit to show the

particulars of each field of science. The areas

varied from Organic Chemistry to Environmental

Engineering, with the group that presented

environmental engineering winning flash drive

bracelets that were donated by the University

of Alabama’s Department of Chemistry.

The next activity involved the students

being broken into groups of 5, given string and

a rubber band, and given the task of creating a

device that can stack cups in a timely fashion.

Once the devices were created the groups were

challenged to a race to see who could stack the

cups the fastest. The winners of this challenge

were rewarded with Subway gift cards that

were donated by NOBCChE.

The final challenge of the day was

entitled CSI: Sumter County. The students

were given a sample of liquid that they had to

share with other students. The students were

encouraged to wear the proper safety attire.

Once the samples were obtained and

shared the samples were then tested to

determine whether their sample had

the mysterious disease. The students

then used clues to trace back the

origin on the diseased samples.

Once this exercise was

completed a discussion of A3 (Ask,

Accept, Act) 4 life, a new initiative of

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc in cooperation

with the CDC, ensued. Women and Girls HIV

Aids Awareness Day was March 10th, so it was

important that the time was taken out to

educate the young adults about the risks

associated with sharing fluids with partners that

they were unsure about.

The program was concluded by a

discussion of what was learned by the students

and a lunch. The event was successful and left

the students ready to learn more and participate

in other events just like it.

72nd Regional Conference

The 72nd Southeast Regional

Conference will be held April 12-

15, 2012 at the Sheraton Hotel in

the heart of downtown

Birmingham, Alabama. The

conference will be hosted by the

Chi Sigma Alumnae Chapter, and

the conference theme is “Setting

the Magic City On Fire to Serve!”

Plenary sessions will begin Friday

morning at 9:00 a.m.
