The Officiating Replay System

The Officiating Replay System (ORS) records unlimited HD broadcast camera angles simultaneously. All feeds are recorded in sync so that split screen views can show the action of one player combined with the reaction of the opponent.

Hawk-Eye

Hawk-Eye is the world leader in sports officiating technology. Hawk-Eye has an annual involvement in over 100 events including: The Wimbledon Championships, The Cricket World Cup, World Championships Snooker and The Indian Premier league. In addition Hawk-Eye is a widely recognised broadcast enhancement feature, providing statistics and in depth analysis to sports fans, as well as players and coaches. The Officiating Replay System is Hawk-Eye’s latest analytical innovation to enhance the integration of video and data.

The ORS System

All footage and software can be exported onto a USB memory stick and reviewed on a laptop. This allows players and coaches to review matches from any location when on tour. A single memory stick can hold multiple matches, even a player’s complete tournament. Key events can be bookmarked and tagged for quick, easy review. The system has high quality digital zoom capabilities allowing small details to be seen without pixelation.

Hawk-Eye Coaching Technology

Integration with Data

All of the match and tracking data is time stamped to link it to the relevant part of the video. This provides the following benefits:

Automatically skip all the time between points for fast review.

Jump to specific moments in the match E.g. show all break point chances.

Overlay on the video the speed and spin of every shot in the rally.

In addition, match and tracking data are a valuable analytical tool in their own right and the ORS software enables all of this data to be easily visualised. The screen shot below shows the Djokovic serve pattern using Hawk-Eye statistics visualisation software. When the user clicks on a serve in the statistics window, they are shown the relevant tracking data and the video is automatically taken to that point.

SPIN ANALYSIS LAST SHOT - 650 RPM

SPEED ANALYSIS LAST SHOT - 118 KPH

Advantages over Broadcast Feed

To have a continuous feed of the cameras focused on the players will be a new, incredibly valuable resource for coaches. The television program output will only show the main broadcast camera (camera 1) during the point. Replays are the coaches’ only opportunity to see player close ups during the point. A bad shot is rarely replayed and this is likely to be an aspect of the game of significant coaching interest. The ORS allows the user to review alternative camera angles at their own pace and at a variety of speeds, including frame by frame to thoroughly investigate technique and skill. For example, the broadcaster does not have sufficient time between points to show more than one shot of super slow-mo footage from high frame rate cameras. All of this high frame rate content will be available within the ORS.

The statistics visualisation software and integration with the ORS is available for coaching purposes and as an interactive tool in hospitality suites.
